Kanskje tredje gang blir sjarmen?
For andre gang på mindre enn en måned kom Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis innen tre outs fra en no-hitter, bare for å få den revet fra ham takket være en lead-off homer på den niende.
Francisco Lindor var den som knuste den 28 år gamle starterens håp om å lage historie 19 dager etter at Angels-spilleren Taylor Ward gjorde det i en kamp mot Francis 24. august.
Mens Francis gikk glipp av ett stykke historie, etset han navnet sitt inn i rekordbøkene for en annen.
Francis ble den første pitcheren siden Nolan Ryan hadde tapt to no-hit-bud i den niende omgangen i samme sesong, ifølge Sarah Langs.
Francis’ flaks ser også ut til å passe med hvordan ting har gått for Blue Jays-pitchere tidligere, spesielt Dave Stieb som led enda mer hjertesorg enn onsdagens starter har i år.
Mens Stieb er den eneste Jays-pitcheren som har spilt inn en no-hitter – og gjorde det 2. september 1990 – tok det flere forsøk for å endelig lage historie.
Stieb kom til kort i to no-hit-bud på slutten av 1988-sesongen da han kom innenfor ett ut ved to separate anledninger bare for å få historien tatt fra ham.
Onsdag bar Francis nei-nei inn i siste omgang og så ut til å holde Mets treffløse for første gang siden Max Scherzer gjorde det med Nationals i oktober 2015.
I stedet sendte Lindor et skudd til høyre felt på et treff som han fortalte journalister han visste var «100 prosent» et hjemmeløp da han traff det.
Merkelig nok registrerte Mets sin femte seier i franchisehistorien etter å ha vært no-hit gjennom åtte omganger, ifølge Elias Sports Bureau.
Interessant nok hadde Francis bare slått ut én batter til å gå til den niende før Lindor brøt opp no-hitter-budet.
Mets fortsatte å score seks løp i rammen – inkludert en tre-løps homer av Francisco Alvarez for å vinne kampen 6-2.
