Broren til Lazar Đukić, CrossFit-konkurrenten som døde under svømmedelen av en konkurranse i Texas, mener tragedien kunne vært forhindret da han brøt tausheten sin på fredag.
«Du elsket sporten som ikke elsket deg tilbake,» skrev Luka Đukić på sin Instagram-historie, over et svart-hvitt-bilde av en hyllest til broren.
Den 28 år gamle serbiske friidrettsutøveren forsvant nær slutten av 800 meter svømmetur i Fort Worths Marine Creek Lake ved de årlige CrossFit-kampene torsdag.
Kroppen hans ble trukket opp av vannet to timer etter livestreamingen.
«Ingen hyllest vil noen gang gi deg tilbake til meg,» sa den sørgende broren. «Dette er noe som kunne vært forhindret, og det er ingen måte å omgå det.»
Luka Đukić la ut et bildeløst, svart-hvitt-bilde av de to brødrene som klemte seg timer før den emosjonelle uttalelsen.
«Men jeg har enorm respekt for alle idrettsutøvere, uansett hvordan de bestemte seg for å takle denne situasjonen. Hvis noe, visste vi hva som kreves for å være i den etasjen,» sa den yngre Đukić.
En uke før den årlige begivenheten øvde Luka Đukić løpsruten sammen med sin bror under deres siste forberedelser.
CrossFit-sjef Don Faul sa i en uttalelse fredag til Associated Press at sikkerhet er «av største bekymring» og tjenestemenn har «strenge protokoller på plass for hvert arrangement på CrossFit Games.»
Han la til at organisasjonen har satt i gang en etterforskning av Dukics død, som vil inkludere «en uavhengig tredjeparts gjennomgang».
Dagen før sa Faul på en pressekonferanse at sikkerhetspersonell var på stedet ved svømmearrangementet, men han ga ikke ytterligere detaljer.
CrossFit har ikke umiddelbart detaljert sikkerhetsplanen sin.
En tilskuer på arrangementet sa at hun så folk, som hun trodde var badevakter som satt på padlebrett i vannet der konkurrentene svømte forbi.
«Måler hvor menneskene på padlebrettene var og alt, det er bare det at han burde vært tilgjengelig,» sa Kaitlin Pritchard til Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Den 25 år gamle broren fortalte at han kunne snakke om det tragiske dødsfallet i fremtiden, men «for nå er dette alt jeg vil dele om denne saken».
«Min bror, du berørte flere liv enn du vet, og du vil leve for alltid,» la han til.
CrossFit kalte Đukićs død «den tristeste dagen» i organisasjonens 24-årige historie, men utløste raseri for å fortsette den tre dager lange konkurransen.
«Vi er knust av tapet av Lazar Đukić sammen med hele CrossFit-fellesskapet,» skrev organisasjonen i en hyllest sent torsdag kveld,
«Lazar var en av sportens mest talentfulle konkurrenter, men han var mye mer enn en idrettsutøver. Han var en sønn, en bror og en venn for praktisk talt alle som kjente ham.»
«Tapet av lyset hans er utenkelig,» la hyllesten til. «Det første instinktet er å legge ned. Å isolere. Å sørge.»
«Men den eneste kuren for sorg er å sørge. Og den beste måten å sørge på er sammen. I samfunnet vårt hyller vi å komme sammen for å gjøre vanskelige ting. I denne ånden har vi bestemt oss for å gå videre med 2024 CrossFit Games.
«Denne helgen er dedikert til Lazar Đukić.»
Før dag 2-aksjonen startet fredag morgen, ble det holdt et øyeblikks stillhet for Lazar inne i Dickies Arena i Fort Worth.
Konkurrentene, iført svart CrossFit-merkeklær, gikk ut på arenagulvet under hyllesten mens et bilde av Đukić hang over på videotavlen.
«Hans konkurranseånd, uvanlige vennlighet og gledelige tilstedeværelse vil bli dypt savnet av alle som kjente ham,» sa taleren.
Noen CrossFit-utøvere var synlig emosjonelle under de 20 sekundene med stillhet.
