Byens største fagforening for transittarbeidere krever at MTA øker sikkerhetstiltakene ved enden av T-banelinjene i kjølvannet av den brutale knivstikkingen av togoperatøren Myran Pollack i Brooklyn forrige uke.
Medlemmer av Transport Workers Union Local 100 – som representerer mer enn 40 000 buss- og t-banearbeidere – samlet seg torsdag utenfor Crown Heights-Utica Avenue-stasjonen ved enden av linjen nr. 4, det samme stoppet der en tilbakefallsangriper stakk 60 år gammel. -gamle Pollack to ganger 8. oktober.
– Vi trenger virkelig handling nå. Medlemmene våre står overfor uakseptable farer, og den nåværende politikken reduserer den ikke, sa Richard Davis, president for TWU Local 100, i en uttalelse.
«Det er på tide at MTA går opp og tar ansvar for å beskytte arbeiderne som holder denne byen i gang.»
Fagforbundet presser på for en regelverksendring slik at transittarbeidere ikke lenger jobber alene mens de tar tog ut av drift.
De oppfordrer til at konduktører og togoperatører går det ryddede toget sammen for å sikre at ingen passasjerer fortsatt er om bord.
I løpet av de siste tre årene har 31 MTA-arbeidere blitt overfalt mens de ryddet ut tog, «ytterligere bevis på det presserende behovet for sikkerhetsreformer,» sa fagforeningen.
I Pollacks tilfelle forsøkte han å rydde ut toget alene da han ba den dvelende passasjeren Jonathan Davalos (27) om å gå, sa myndighetene.
I stedet for å etterkomme, ble Davalos angivelig rasende og fulgte Pollack inn på plattformen før han angrep ham så ondskapsfullt at han trengte minst to operasjoner.
Fagforeningen ber også om at MTA-politiet er til stede på alle stasjoner der tog evakueres – slik at de er til stede for å hjelpe hvis passasjerer blir voldelige.
«Dette er ikke bare forslag – de er livreddende tiltak,» sa Canella Gomez, TWU Local 100 Rapid Transit Operations Vice President i en uttalelse. «Våre medlemmer skal aldri måtte møte disse farene alene. Vi trenger sterkere retningslinjer og raskere reaksjoner for å holde folkene våre trygge.»
Fagforeningsmedlemmer presser i tillegg på for hyppige møter mellom topp MTA-tjenestemenn og TWU Local 100 «for å gjennomgå og implementere forbedrede sikkerhetsprotokoller for frontlinjearbeidere.»
«Transittarbeidere må respekteres og beskyttes!» fagforeningsmedlemmer sang på torsdagssamlingen. «Nok er nok!»
Noen holdt skilt som sa: «Vi kommer ikke på jobb for å være boksesekker» og «Var du trygg i dag eller bare heldig?»
De siste NYPD-dataene – som dekker perioden fra 1. januar til 6. oktober – indikerer at angrep på MTA-t-ansatte over hele byen har sunket til 30 fra de 44 som ble rapportert i løpet av samme tidsramme i 2023.
I en slik hendelse forrige måned slo Robert Ray, 33, tilfeldig en kvinnelig stasjonsagent i ansiktet i Midtown, og hevdet at han gjorde det fordi «fordi stemmene i hodet mitt snakket til meg,» sa påtalemyndigheten.
I slutten av mai ble en MTA-konduktør på vakt slått i ansiktet da han forsøkte å bryte opp et slagsmål på en t-banestasjon i Queens, sa myndighetene.
Tidligere samme måned holdt en togoperatør på å rydde et Queens-tog for passasjerer slik at det kunne tas med til et liggested da en gal pendler taklet ham og slo ham i gulvet i bilen, sa politiet.
En annen dirigent ble tilfeldig slått i hodet med en glassflaske av en uhengslet fremmed i Bronx tilbake i mars, sa politiet.
Den midlertidige NYC Transit-presidenten Demetrius Crichlow tok ikke direkte opp fagforeningens krav, men sa at MTA jobber for å holde gjengangere borte fra gatene.
«Før hans avskyelige angrep på en togoperatør, hadde Jonathan Davalos på forskjellige dager angrepet en annen T-baneansatt og en rytter,» sa Crichlow i en uttalelse fredag.
«Denne tilbakefallsadferden er grunnen til at MTA har kjempet i Albany for strengere straffer for forbrytelser som skjer i transittsystemet, og hvorfor vi presser på for mest mulig aggressive straffeforfølgelser når ansatte, kunder og politi blir overfalt,» heter det i uttalelsen.
«Vi er glade for å ha TWU Local 100 med på denne innsatsen, og for å ha deres støtte til NYPD og distriktsadvokatene, ettersom de jobber for å sikre at maksimalt mulige konsekvenser blir pålagt.»
En talsmann for byrået sa at MTA vil fortsette å diskutere sikkerhetsspørsmål med sine «arbeidspartnere».
