Etter 40 års ekteskap har Connie Chung gjort mer enn nok forskning til å vite hva hun snakker om.
Journalisten avslørte nylig hva som har fått ekteskapet hennes med Maury Povich til å fungere siden hun knyttet til seg i 1984.
«Hvis du virkelig bryter det ned, har Maury og jeg alltid hatt våre egne ting vi gjør,» sa Chung til US Weekly på tirsdag mens han promoterte «Connie: A Memoir.» «Jeg tror at du ikke trenger å være venn med alle vennene hans, og han trenger ikke å være venn med alle vennene mine. Han kan gå og gjøre det han vil, og jeg skal gjøre det jeg vil.»
Hun la til: «Vi kommer alltid sammen og spiser middag sammen – noen ganger spiser vi lunsj sammen også – men vi kommer ikke i håret på hverandre.»
I Chungs memoarer skrev det tidligere nyhetsankeret i detalj om kjærlighetshistorien hennes med Povich, 85. Hun dedikerte til og med et helt kapittel til romantikken deres.
«Jeg elsker Maury av hele mitt hjerte, og jeg vet at han elsker meg dypt, men noen ganger, du vet, liker jeg ham ikke nødvendigvis,» skrev reporteren. «Min gjetning er at følelsen er gjensidig.»
Chung forklarte denne linjen til US Weekly, og innrømmet at hun «aldri kunne tilbringe hele dagen lang» med TV-verten.
Hun spøkte: «Det er derfor jeg tenker – jeg vet at jeg elsker ham, men når vi bruker for mye tid sammen, er det da jeg ikke liker ham.»
Chung og Povich var i et langdistanseforhold i syv år før de giftet seg i 1984. Paret adopterte deretter sønnen Matthew Povich etter hans fødsel i 1995.
«Jeg visste på en måte at han skulle bli The One, men jeg skulle ikke dit, og han skulle ikke dit. Vi var begge single og nøt friheten vår, husket hun til utsalgsstedet. «Da jeg var klar til å bli bundet, var han ikke klar. Da han var klar til å bli bundet, var jeg ikke klar. Det gikk frem og tilbake, og vi gikk sakte i dette forholdet i lang tid.»
På et tidspunkt bodde Chung og Povich på hver sin side av landet, med henne i Los Angeles og ham i Philadelphia, og det tok paret litt tid å finne tilbake til hverandre.
«Han var en så dårlig gutt at jeg sa: ‘Hei, la oss ta en time-out i seks måneder.’ Og jeg synes det var bra, fortalte Chung.
Etter seks måneder skrev Chung at hun og «Maury»-alunen møttes igjen i et bryllup i Texas, men det var ikke før hun flyttet tilbake til New York City i 1984 at de begynte sin fremtid for fullt.
«Hadde det ikke vært for Maury, kunne jeg aldri hatt den karrieren jeg hadde,» innrømmet Chung i boken sin. «Han har vært mitt fundament, min støttestråle, min kjærlighet, min partner på alle måter, i flere tiår. Han hjalp meg med å navigere min forræderske vei opp stigen. Jeg trodde jeg kunne overleve uten ham. Fyren i meg fortalte meg at jeg ikke var avhengig av noen. Jeg var bare en annen hvit fyr, akkurat som ham. Nå vet jeg at jeg ikke kunne levd uten Maury.»
I 2020 reflekterte paret over kjærlighetshistorien sin under en samtale med People, med Povich som delte tipsene sine for et vellykket ekteskap.
«Uansett hvilke diskusjoner eller argumenter som pågår i løpet av dagen, når hodet treffer puten, er det over og skal ikke fortsette neste morgen. Det er ikke i tankene mine, sa han. «Men vi har alltid respektert hverandres karrierer, og vi har alltid respektert hverandres rom og verdier. Det er ikke nødvendig å gjøre noe. Kanskje det er grunnen til at vi fortsatt er gift.»
