En off-journoffiser ved Atlanta Police Department ble skutt og drept av en av naboene hans etter at han angivelig brøt seg inn i et hus nær St. Andrews Golf Club i Douglas County, Georgia, tidlig fredag morgen, sa tjenestemenn.
Offiseren, identifisert som Aubree Horton, hadde vært i Atlanta Police Department siden 2015 og var sist i Fugitive Unit, sa avdelingen til Fox News Digital.
Horton ble også nettopp hedret med prisen for Årets etterforsker sent i forrige måned, ifølge FOX 5 Atlanta.
«Vi jobber tett med Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for å finne ut mer om hva som skjedde mens de etterforsker hendelsen,» sa avdelingen i en uttalelse delt med Fox News Digital.
Overvåkingsvideo viste at Horton så ut til å ha opplevd en «psykisk helseepisode eller (var) under påvirkning av narkotika,» rapporterte FOX 5.
«Da han kom inn, produserte huseieren et skytevåpen i selvforsvar og skjøt personen,» fortalte kaptein Jon Mauney ved Douglas County Sheriff’s Office til journalister, ifølge FOX 5.
Horton bodde bare noen få gater unna huset han angivelig brøt seg inn i, rapporterte stasjonen.
Naboene ble sjokkert.
«Det er akkurat her i nabolaget ditt og et golfsamfunn og et sted hvor du virkelig tror at dette aldri ville skje,» sa en nabo til FOX 5.
Etterforskerne vet ennå ikke hvorfor Horton brøt seg inn i hjemmet.
