En italiensk sprinter som vant 11 nasjonale titler som mann er nå satt til å bli den første åpenlyst transkjønnede idrettsutøveren som konkurrerer i kvinneløp under de kommende paralympiske leker i Paris.
Den synshemmede løperen Valentina Petrillo (50), som gikk over i 2019, er valgt ut til å representere Italia i kvinnenes 200 og 400 meter.
«Jeg synes fortsatt det er vanskelig å tro det, og jeg holder føttene på bakken fordi sjansen min til å delta i Tokyo ble savnet av en værhår,» sa Petrillo mandag etter utvalget.
«Jeg vil først begynne å tenke på Paris-lekene når jeg kommer til Frankrike.»
Petrillos uttak til Paralympics kommer etter at hun tok bronsemedaljer på 200 og 400 meter for kvinner under parafriidretts-VM i fjor i Paris.
Før overgangen hadde Petrillo vunnet 11 nasjonale titler i herrekategorien.
Andrew Parsons, president for Den internasjonale paralympiske komité, sa til BBC Sports at Petrillo ville være velkommen til Paris-lekene i henhold til World Para Athletics-politikken, som for øyeblikket tillater en person som er lovlig anerkjent som kvinne, å konkurrere i den kategorien deres funksjonshemming kvalifiserer dem til.
IPC lar idrettens styrende organer sette sine egne retningslinjer når det gjelder deltakelse.
Parsons sa at han var «forberedt på kritikken» som sannsynligvis vil komme med Petrillos deltakelse i de kommende kampene.
«Vi må respektere våre regler, vi kan ikke disrespektere våre regler,» sa han.
«Så for øyeblikket tillater World Para Athletics-reglene henne å konkurrere, så hun vil være velkommen som enhver annen atlet.»
Petrillos visuelle evner er begrenset til 1/50 av normalområdet etter at hun ble diagnostisert med Stargardts syndrom i en alder av 14, noe som resulterte i forverring av synet.
Paralympics i Paris 2024 starter 28. august og varer til 8. september.
