PARIS – Alain Delon, den internasjonalt anerkjente franske skuespilleren som legemliggjorde både den slemme fyren og politimannen og fikk hjerter til å banke rundt om i verden, døde i en alder av 88, rapporterte franske medier.
Med sitt kjekke utseende og ømme måte klarte den produktive skuespilleren å kombinere seighet med en tiltalende, sårbar kvalitet som gjorde ham til en av Frankrikes minneverdige ledende menn.
Delon var også produsent, dukket opp i skuespill og i senere år i TV-filmer.
Den franske presidenten Emmanuel Macron hyllet den X til «et fransk monument».
«Alain Delon har spilt legendariske roller og fått verden til å drømme,» skrev han. «Melankolsk, populær, hemmelighetsfull, han var mer enn en stjerne.»
Delons barn kunngjorde dødsfallet søndag i en uttalelse til det franske nasjonale nyhetsbyrået Agence France-Presse, en vanlig praksis i Frankrike. Hyllesten til Delon begynte umiddelbart å strømme inn på sosiale plattformer, og alle ledende franske medier gikk over til fullverdig dekning av hans rike karriere.
Tidligere i år hadde sønnen Anthony sagt at faren hans hadde blitt diagnostisert med B-celle lymfom, en type kreft.
I løpet av det siste året hadde Delons skjøre helsetilstand vært kjernen i en familiestrid om omsorgen hans som ga opphav til bitre meningsutvekslinger gjennom media blant hans tre barn.
På toppen av karrieren, på 1960- og 1970-tallet, ble Delon oppsøkt av noen av verdens beste regissører, fra Luchino Visconti til Joseph Losey.
I de senere årene ble Delon desillusjonert av filmindustrien og sa at penger hadde drept drømmen. «Penger, handel og TV har ødelagt drømmemaskinen,» skrev han i en 2003-utgave av nyhetsavisen Le Nouvel Observateur. «Kinoen min er død. Og meg også.»
Men han fortsatte å jobbe ofte, og dukket opp i flere TV-filmer på 70-tallet.
Delons tilstedeværelse var uforglemmelig, enten han spilte moralsk fordervede helter eller romantiske ledende menn. Han høstet første gang anerkjennelse i 1960 med «Plein Soleil», regissert av Réne Clément, der han spilte en morder som forsøkte å ta på seg identiteten til ofrene hans.
Han laget flere italienske filmer, og jobbet, spesielt med Visconti i 1961-filmen «Rocco and His Brothers», der Delon skildrer en selvoppofrende bror som ønsker å hjelpe søsken. Filmen vant den spesielle juryprisen på filmfestivalen i Venezia.
Visconti-filmen «Le Guepard» (Leoparden) fra 1963 med Delon i hovedrollen vant Gullpalmen, den høyeste utmerkelsen på filmfestivalen i Cannes. Hans andre filmer inkluderte Cléments «Is Paris Burning», med et manus av blant andre Gore Vidal og Francis Ford Coppola; «La Piscine» (Synderne), regissert av Jacques Deray; og, i en avgang, Loseys «The Assassination of Trotsky» i 1972.
I 1968 begynte Delon å produsere filmer – 26 av dem innen 1990 – en del av et vanvittig og selvsikkert momentum som han opprettholdt hele livet.
Delons selvtillit var til å ta og føle på i uttalelsen hans til Femme i 1996, «Jeg liker å bli elsket slik jeg elsker meg selv!» Dette gjentok hans karismatiske skjermpersonlighet.
Delon fortsatte å fengsle publikum i årevis – på veien med kritikk for kommentarer som ble ansett som utdaterte. I 2010 dukket han opp i «Un mari de trop» («One Husband Too Many») og kom tilbake til scenen i 2011 med «An Ordinary Day» sammen med datteren Anouchka.
Han ledet kort Juryen for Miss France, men trakk seg i 2013 etter en uenighet om noen kontroversielle uttalelser, som inkluderte kritikk av kvinner, LGBTQIA+-rettigheter og migranter. Til tross for disse kontroversene, mottok han en ærespalme på filmfestivalen i Cannes i 2019, en avgjørelse som utløste ytterligere debatt.
Brigitte Bardot Foundation, dedikert til dyrevern, hyllet «en eksepsjonell mann, en uforglemmelig kunstner og en god venn av dyr», i en uttalelse utgitt på sosiale medier. Delon var «en nær venn» av den franske filmlegenden Brigitte Bardot «som er dypt trist over hans bortgang», heter det i uttalelsen. «Vi mister en dyrebar venn og en mann med et stort hjerte.»
Den franske filmprodusenten Alain Terzian sa Delon var «den siste av gigantene».
«Det er en side som blir snudd i historien til fransk kino,» sa han til France Inter radio. Terzian, som produserte flere filmer regissert av Delon, husket at «hver gang han ankom et sted … var det en slags nesten mystisk, kvasi-religiøs respekt. Han var fascinerende.»
Født 8. november 1935 i Sceaux, like sør for Paris, ble Delon plassert hos en fosterfamilie etter foreldrenes separasjon da han var 4. Deretter gikk han på en romersk-katolsk internatskole.
Som 17-åring ble Delon med i marinen og ble sendt til Indokina. Tilbake i Frankrike i 1956 hadde han forskjellige strøjobber fra servitør til en transportør på kjøttmarkedet i Paris før han begynte å handle.
Delon fikk sønnen Anthony i 1964 med sin daværende kone Nathalie Canovas, som spilte sammen med ham i Jean-Pierre Melvilles «The Samurai» i 1967. Han fikk ytterligere to barn, Anouchka og Alain-Fabien, med en senere følgesvenn, Rosalie van Breemen , som han produserte en sang og videoklipp med i 1987. Han ble også antatt å ha vært faren til Ari Boulogne, sønnen til den tyske modellen og sangeren Nico, selv om han aldri offentlig erkjente farskapet.
«Jeg er veldig god på tre ting: jobben min, tåpelighet og barn,» sa han i et L’Express-intervju fra 1995.
Delon sjonglerte med forskjellige aktiviteter gjennom hele livet, fra å sette opp en stall med travhester til å utvikle cologne for menn og kvinner, etterfulgt av klokker, briller og annet tilbehør. Han samlet også malerier og skulpturer.
Delon kunngjorde slutten på skuespillerkarrieren i 1999, bare for å fortsette, og dukket opp i Bertrand Bliers «Les Acteurs» (The Actors) samme år. Senere dukket han opp i flere TV-politishow.
Hans gode utseende holdt ham oppe. I august 2002 fortalte Delon til et ukeblad, L’Humanite Hebdo, at han ikke fortsatt ville vært i bransjen hvis det ikke var slik.
«Du vil aldri se meg gammel og stygg,» sa han da han allerede nærmet seg 70, «fordi jeg drar før, ellers dør jeg.»
Det var imidlertid i 2019 at Delon kapslet inn følelsene hans om livets mening under en gallabegivenhet som hedret ham på filmfestivalen i Cannes. «En ting jeg er sikker på er at hvis det er noe jeg er stolt av, egentlig, det eneste, så er det karrieren min.»
