Velstående millennials forlater blå stater på begge kyster og drar til røde stater i sør i tusenvis, ifølge en fersk studie.
Millennials – de mellom 26 og 45 år – som henter inn $200 000 eller mer i året som husholdning, flykter fra California og New York i stort antall mens flere og flere flytter til Florida og Texas, ifølge en Smart Asset-analyse.
California så den største avgangen av høyttjenende Gen Yers med et nettotap på 9 181 husstander og New York så den nest største med et nettotap på 4 251 husholdninger, ifølge analysen av de siste selvangivelsesdataene fra 2021 og 2022.
Golden State hadde 14 139 velstående millennials flytte inn i sine grenser, men så flere – totalt 23 320 – forlate.
På samme måte tok New York 11.340 nye velstående tusenårige innbyggere, men mistet 15.591, heter det i studien.
Begge stater har noen av landets høyeste levekostnader, og selv de velstående kan strekke pengene sine ytterligere i andre deler av landet hvor levekostnadene og skattene kan være lavere.
For eksempel trakk Florida og Texas inn de mest velstående generasjon Y-medlemmene.
Florida hadde en nettogevinst på 6.188 velstående millennials og Texas fikk en nettogevinst på 5.151. North Carolina var neste med 1.970.
Medianinntekten blant millennials i USA er omtrent $84 000 årlig.
De som tjener $200 000 eller mer «har mer disponibel inntekt og økonomisk frihet enn sine median-motparter, så deres innvirkning på lokale økonomier kan bli overdimensjonert,» bemerker rapporten.
Når de plukker opp og flytter stater, «følger deres uforholdsmessige økonomiske makt også med dem,» sa rapportforfatteren.
