The City That Never Sleeps kan få hard konkurranse – bare noen timers kjøring opp gjennom Thruway.
Ved å bli med på en veldig kort liste over nordamerikanske byer som tillater barer å holde åpent og servere alkohol 24 timer i døgnet, håper Montreal – der drikkealderen er 18 – å utvide sin appell som nattelivsdestinasjon ytterligere, rapporterte BBC.
Det dristige trinnet ville sette Canadas andre by i eliteselskap med bare to andre festbyer – New Orleans og Las Vegas.
Det nye Santé! klausulen vil ikke lenger kreve at barer i visse soner stenger klokken 03.00, mens et spesielt utpekt 24-timers nattelivsområde vil bli opprettet.
«Dette er en mulighet for økonomisk vekst,» sa byrådsmedlem Ericka Alneus, som var forkjemper for endringen, til utsalgsstedet. «Men det er også for å presentere, og forsterke, kulturscenen.»
En håndfull utsalgssteder i byen – lenge et populært festmål for amerikanske bachelorhelger og amerikanske studenter som ønsker å drikke lovlig – er allerede i gang med å prøve konseptet, ifølge Time Out.
Byen har ennå ikke kunngjort detaljer om det nye distriktet, men endringene forventes etter sigende å bli rullet ut på et tidspunkt i år.
Flyttingen ser ut til å følge endringer gjort i andre populære destinasjoner som Berlin og Tokyo, som også har innført spesielle soner og nye lover i håp om å bringe mer penger inn i lokale kasser.
Tilbake nede i Big Apple stenger barene som regel klokken 04.00, selv om byen alltid har hatt en legendarisk – om enn litt stealth – kultur etter arbeidstid.
Noen innbyggere i Montreal stiller spørsmål ved flyttingen, men andre sier at å endre loven slik at stengetidene er mer forskjøvet kan hjelpe sterkt med problemer som sikkerhet.
«I Montreal stenger vi klokken 3.00. Folk er fulle klokken 01.00 – og de er superfulle klokken 03.00,» forklarte en bareier til BBC.
«Et av problemene vi har er at klokken 03.00 er det som en galskap. Men hvis du utvider timene, er det mindre problemer, mindre etterspørsel etter sikkerhet, sa L’ile Noire-eier Michel Lavallée.
