Biden-administrasjonen tar en seiersrunde etter at føderale tjenestemenn inngikk avtaler med legemiddelfirmaer for å senke prisen for 10 av Medicares mest populære og dyreste legemidler, men delte få umiddelbare detaljer om den nye prisen eldre amerikanere vil betale når de fyller ut disse reseptene.
Tjenestemenn i Det hvite hus sa onsdag kveld at de forventer at amerikanske skattebetalere vil spare 6 milliarder dollar på de nye prisene, mens eldre amerikanere kan spare rundt 1,5 milliarder dollar på medisinene sine.
Disse anslagene var imidlertid basert på daterte estimater, og administrasjonen delte ingen detaljer om hvordan de kom frem til tallene.
Ikke desto mindre vil de nylig forhandlede prisene – fortsatt unnvikende for publikum fra tidlig torsdag morgen – påvirke prisen på medisiner som brukes av millioner av eldre amerikanere for å hjelpe til med å håndtere diabetes, blodkreft og forhindre hjertesvikt eller blodpropp.
Medikamentene inkluderer blodfortynnende Xarelto og Eliquis og diabetesmedisiner Jardiance og Januvia.
Medicare brukte 50 milliarder dollar på å dekke medisinene i fjor.
Det er en landemerkeavtale for Medicare-programmet, som gir helsetjenester til mer enn 67 millioner eldre og funksjonshemmede amerikanere.
I flere tiår hadde den føderale regjeringen vært utestengt fra byttehandel med farmasøytiske selskaper over prisen på legemidlene deres, selv om det er en rutineprosess for private forsikringsselskaper.
«Dette betydde at legemiddelselskaper i utgangspunktet kunne kreve hva de måtte ønske for livreddende behandlinger folk stoler på, og alle amerikanere betalte prisen,» sa Det hvite hus-rådgiver Neera Tanden til journalister i en samtale onsdag kveld.
Narkotikaavtalene vil bli et samlingspunkt for visepresident Kamala Harris’ presidentkampanje, spesielt siden hun avga den uavgjorte stemmen for å vedta loven.
Hun vil bli med president Joe Biden torsdag for å kunngjøre stoffprisene, deres første felles taleopptreden siden hun erstattet ham på toppen av den demokratiske billetten, ettersom de begge sliter med å overbevise velgerne om at kostnadene vil gå ned etter år med inflasjon over normalen.
Paret dukket sist opp offentlig sammen for å ønske velkommen tilbake til de amerikanske amerikanerne som ble internert i Russland, som ble løslatt som en del av et massivt fangebytte tidligere denne måneden.
Kraftige farmasøytiske selskaper forsøkte uten hell å inngi søksmål for å stoppe forhandlingene, som ble lov i 2022, da en demokratisk kontrollert kongress vedtok inflasjonsreduksjonsloven, og reviderte flere Medicare-forskrifter for reseptbelagte legemidler.
Men ledere av disse selskapene har også antydet de siste ukene under inntektssamtaler at de ikke forventer at forhandlingene vil påvirke bunnlinjen deres.
Sentrene for Medicare og Medicaid Services, som hadde tilsyn med avtalen, forventes å frigi de endelige medisinprisene senere torsdag.
De nye prisene trer ikke i kraft før i 2026.
Neste år kan Institutt for helse og menneskelige tjenester velge ut ytterligere 15 legemidler til prisforhandlinger.
Før stoffprisene ble endelig fastsatt, estimerte Congressional Budget Office at forhandlingene kunne spare den føderale regjeringen 25 milliarder dollar i 2031.
Den offisielle begivenheten kommer dagen før Harris skal avsløre en del av hennes økonomiske agenda på fredag i North Carolina, hvor hun hadde som mål å rulle ut andre måter hun planlegger å bidra til å kutte kostnader og øke inntektene for middelklassen.
