Det amerikanske detaljsalget steg bare 0,1 % forrige måned – et svakere resultat enn forventet som sannsynligvis øker oddsen for et stort rentekutt denne uken fra Federal Reserve.
Data utgitt på tirsdag av handelsdepartementet viste at verdien av detaljhandelskjøp steg med 0,1 % i august – under analytikerestimatene på 0,2 % – ettersom forbrukere med pengebegrensninger har brent seg gjennom sparing og trukket tilbake på ikke-essensielle utgifter.
Tallene som var dårligere enn forventet, viste en betydelig utgiftsretrett sammenlignet med forrige måned, da handelsmenn håper at Federal Reserve vil utstede etterlengtede rentekutt etter deres politiske møte onsdag.
«Enhver uventet svakhet i denne rapporten kan gjenopplive bekymringer om å bremse økonomisk momentum og potensielt presse Federal Reserve mot en mer dueaktig posisjon i sin kommende rentebeslutning,» sa Luca Santos, valutaanalytiker i ACY Securities, til The Post i en uttalelse.
Detaljsalget for måneden før hadde økt med 1 %, over forventningene på 0,4 % vekst. Ti av 13 kategorier viste vekst i juli.
Av de 13 kategoriene som er oppført av handelsdepartementet, viste fire av dem nedgang i august, ifølge myndighetenes data.
