Her er en annen grunn til å prøve «Sober October» – en britisk psykiater advarer om en «middelaldrende drikkeepidemi» som kan øke risikoen for kreft og til og med tidlig død.
«Jeg ser mange menn og kvinner i denne kategorien på klinikken min,» skrev Dr. Max Pemberton søndag i Daily Mail.
«Når jeg spør dem om drikkingen deres, klarer de ofte ikke å se at de har et problem fordi ting (ennå) ikke har nådd det stadiet hvor de fysisk er avhengige av det – når kroppen blir avhengig av alkohol og shakene starter hvis de gå uten,» la han til.
Pemberton anbefaler å gjennomgå CAGE-vurderingen med fire spørsmål, et screeningsverktøy som kan identifisere et rusproblem. CAGE – utviklet i 1968 av Dr. John Ewing, en psykiatriprofessor og avhengighetsterapikliniker ved University of North Carolina i Chapel Hill – står for Cut down, Annoyed, Guilty og Eye-opener.
- Kutt ned: Har du noen gang følt at du burde kutte ned på drikkingen?
- Irritert: Har folk irritert deg ved å kritisere drikkingen din?
- Skyldig: Har du noen gang følt deg dårlig eller skyldig over drikkingen din?
- Øyeåpner: Har du noen gang drukket en drink om morgenen for å stabilisere nervene eller bli kvitt bakrus?
«Å svare ‘ja’ på to eller flere av disse spørsmålene betyr at det kan være et problem som ikke bare kan bortforklares som sommermoro eller rettes opp med Sober October,» skrev Pemberton.
«Nøktern oktober» ligner på «Tørr januar» – de er månedlange utfordringer som oppmuntrer folk til å avstå fra alkohol, noe som kan forbedre søvnen og mental helse, føre til vekttap, senke blodtrykket og bidra til å spare penger.
En fjerdedel av amerikanere som er lovlig i stand til å drikke, rapporterte at de deltok i Dry January i år, mens Sober October vinner frem over hele verden, spesielt blant millennials.
Pemberton sier at å delta i denne typen bragder kan avsløre et problem som trenger behandling.
«Å redusere alkoholinntaket er alltid en fornuftig ting, men hvis det første du gjør den første februar eller november er å strekke deg etter korketrekkeren, er det en god indikator på at en måned av alkohol ikke kommer til å fikse ting – og det kan til og med være på tide å søke profesjonell hjelp,” forklarte Pemberton.
Anslagsvis 29 millioner amerikanere – inkludert omtrent én av fem middelaldrende voksne – er ikke i stand til å stoppe eller kontrollere drikkingen til tross for store konsekvenser.
Ny forskning tyder på at ingen mengde alkohol er gunstig for helsen din – det kan øke risikoen for å utvikle ulike kreftformer, leversykdommer, pankreatitt, hjerneskade, psykiske problemer og søvnproblemer, blant andre problemer.
