Da Superstorm Sandy slo til i oktober 2012, utslettet den mye av Jarad og Christel Astins leilighet i første etasje i Far Rockaway, New York. De berget imidlertid den 22 fot lange seilbåten, og den ble en symbolsk del av deres livsendrende kursendring.
Jarad, da 47, ble utbrent med sin levende dyrekuratorjobb på Brooklyn Children’s Museum, mens han samtidig spillejobber som musiker og sanger. Christel, 49 år, var fløytist i den irske musikkverdenen og underviste ved New York Irish Arts Center.
«Økonomisk var det vanskelig,» sa Jarad, da paret oppdro to små døtre på 2 og 11 år på den tiden.
Selv om de hadde drømt om å bo i utlandet når de ble pensjonist, «begynte vi lovlig å sparke rundt ideen om å seile på heltid,» sa Jarad. «Det var et øyeblikk av frihet.»
For å gjøre visjon til handling samlet Astins i november 2013 inn 60 000 dollar fra familien, kjøpte en større yacht, ble med på et seilingsrally og dro til Karibia med kun én musikkopptreden bestilt på forhånd.
Det første året deres var det mest utfordrende, sa Jarad, mens de seilte gjennom stormfulle farvann, hjemmeunderviste jentene sine på husbåten og landede arenaer for å bestille sin akustisk-sigøyner-soul musikalske handling.
«Mange mennesker som gjør ting som dette selger hjemmet sitt og bruker fortjenesten til en ny livsstil. Vi var ikke i den posisjonen. Vi måtte finne arbeid. Det var alt eller ingenting – vi måtte møte opp og mas, sa han.
I 2017, etter at orkanene Irma og Maria ødela noen av de lukrative etablissementene duoen opptrådte på, fikk Jarad kapteinlisensen for ekstra inntekt. «Vi jobbet med seilregattaer, og returnerte nordover om sommeren for å lansere Yacht Rock Charters, en chartervirksomhet for fritidsbåter i Jamaica Bay, NY.»
For Christel har tiden og nærheten familien deres har fått vært en bonus.
«Når vi jobbet tre jobber og tok barna fra en fritidsskole til den neste, hadde vi ikke luksusen av tid sammen, eller for oss selv. Jeg kan ta en tur på stranden nå, eller snorkle i kysten. Jeg har plass til å være ute med naturen på en intim måte. Det er magi for meg, sa hun.
Til andre rådet hun: «Hele det å manifestere livet ditt er ekte. Lag en konkret plan. Gjør den tilgjengelig. Start i det små og jobb deg oppover. Ta spranget. For oss kjøpte vi en liten seilbåt og sa, vi skal lære å gjøre dette.»
Hvis du også ønsker å gjøre en stor endring, ikke gå deg vill i det store bildet. «Tenk på den ene tingen du kan gjøre i dag for å komme deg nærmere i morgen, tre måneder fra nå, i din ideelle tilstand,» sa Luck Dookchitra, visepresident for mennesker i Leapsome, et skybasert programvaresystem for menneskelig administrasjon som hjelper organisasjoner med å drive ansattes engasjement, prestasjoner og læring.
For eksempel, for å endre karriere fra menneskelige ressurser til skuespill, «Kan du ta en skuespillertime? Snakk med de i felten. Hva vil det koste? Å sette inn reisen du må ta, vil oppmuntre deg til å gjøre et trekk,” sa Dookchitra.
Å finne en måte å forlate drømmejobben som senior moteredaktør for Cosmopolitan ble viktig for Hudson Valley, NY, bosatt Amri Kibbler, 49, når hun ble mamma.
«Min første datter var 2 år den gangen, og jeg trodde det ville være et blunk å ha en ny, men fikk sekundære fertilitetsproblemer. Jeg gjorde IVF da jeg bestemte meg for å gjøre en stor endring i livet. Stresset med min hektiske livsstil bidro ikke til å bli gravid,» sa hun.
Kibbler søkte et «høyere formål», og til slutt var han med å grunnlegge HeyMama, en nettplattform og fellesskap som kun er medlemskap for kvinner å dele og koble seg på for å balansere morskap med jobb.
«Slagordet vårt er, ‘Sjøgleren er ekte’,» sa Kibbler. «Jeg behandlet det som en heltidsjobb, jobbet faste timer og det spredte seg derfra. Vi ble nylig anskaffet. Fremover lanserer vi en ny plattform med nye, forbedrede funksjoner.»
Hovedrådet Kibbler fikk var å ikke vente, men å bare sette i gang.
«Vi startet vår Instagram-konto med 1000 følgere, og nådde deretter 2000 og 10 000. Du trenger små mål og håndgripelige målestokker. Jeg hadde et mål for uken i stedet for å prøve å sikksakk frem og tilbake, sa hun.
Ifølge Dookchitra, når du gjør en endring, kan du bli inspirert til å jobbe for deg selv, bygge noe flott relatert til lidenskapen din, eller som er mer kreativ eller med navnet ditt på. «Måten verden fungerer nå gir seg selv til at flere mennesker finner lykke og tilfredsstillelse i livet i stedet for å skille det.»
Når du går videre i et nytt liv, er det imidlertid viktig å ha en plan A og B.
«Enhver god bedriftsleder tenker gjennom disse tingene,» sa Dookchitra. «Finn en partner eller coach å sparre med og ta opp eventuelle bekymringer. Tenk på hensikten med ditt dristige trekk. Få en 360-visning av hvorfor du ønsker å bytte karriere eller starte en bedrift. Vær oppmerksom på omstendighetene du er i. Ha en realistisk tidslinje for å minimere ulykkelige overraskelser og være økonomisk ansvarlig.»
Viktigere, når du forlater din nåværende rolle, ikke brenn broer.
«Hvis du har en god karriere, vær gjennomtenkt for hvordan du kommuniserer, siden du kanskje trenger et sikkerhetsnett å gå tilbake til,» rådet Dookchitra.
For Beth Nydick, 51, fra Livingston, NJ, endret tragedien hele hennes arbeidssyn og sysler.
«Jeg hadde vært en matblogger, omtalt på ‘Dr. Oz’ og ‘The Chew’. Min populære cocktailbok ble promotert på Oprah. Så, i samme måned, var jeg i en nesten dødelig bilulykke og min svigerfar ble påkjørt av en lastebil – han døde noen dager senere. Jeg ble rystet, sa Nydick.
Hun følte at hun ønsket å gjøre noe mer «enn å tilby enda en chilioppskrift». I 2020, etter å ha sett en terapeut og deltatt på et gruppecoaching-program, etablerte hun et PR-firma.
«Jeg vet hvordan jeg kan hjelpe folk å vise seg fullt ut som seg selv, eller ha selvtillit til å gå på direktesendt TV, eller snakke på en TED X-scene,» sa Nydick, som for tiden bygger FAME Lab, et live-gruppecoachingprogram for folk som kommer til å lære og bli støttet til å gjøre store, dristige ting.
«Du skaper din egen mulighet for suksess eller fiasko. Det er opp til deg å ta grep,” sa Nydick. «Det vil alltid være noen som kan fortelle deg grunnene til at du ikke bør, kontra hvorfor ikke meg?»
