Mannskapet ombord på den skjebnesvangre Titan-senkbåten som imploderte i fjor led sannsynligvis overveldende «terror og mentale lidelser» i sine siste øyeblikk fordi de «var godt klar over at de kom til å dø», hevdes det i et nytt søksmål.
Familien til den franske oppdageren Paul-Henri Nargeolet la på tirsdag søksmålet på 50 millioner dollar mot den dødsdømte ubåtens operatør – OceanGate – og anklaget selskapet for grov uaktsomhet gitt det «dømte» fartøyets «urolige historie».
Nargeolet, 77, var en av fem personer ombord på Titan-senkbåten da den plutselig imploderte på vei til det berømte vrakstedet på bunnen av Nord-Atlanteren i juni 2023 – og utløste en omfattende etterforskning av hvordan katastrofen skjedde.
I følge drakten «slapp den nedsenkbare vekter» bare 90 minutter etter dykket, noe som indikerer at mannskapet hadde avbrutt eller forsøkt å avbryte dykket tidlig.
«Selv om den eksakte årsaken til feilen aldri vil bli bestemt, er eksperter enige om at Titans mannskap ville ha innsett nøyaktig hva som skjedde,» hevder rettspapirene.
«Sunn fornuft tilsier at mannskapet var godt klar over at de kom til å dø før de døde.»
Registreringen fortsetter med å spekulere i de grufulle siste øyeblikkene Nargeolet og de fire andre ombord sannsynligvis opplevde etter å ha innsett deres truende skjebne.
«Mannskapet kan godt ha hørt karbonfiberens knitrende lyd bli mer intens ettersom vekten av vannet presset på Titans skrog. Mannskapet mistet kommunikasjon og kanskje også strøm, heter det i saken.
«Etter eksperters regning ville de ha fortsatt å stige ned, i full kjennskap til fartøyets irreversible feil, og opplevd terror og mental angst før Titanen til slutt imploderte.»
I søksmålet anklaget Nargeolets familie OceanGate for å unnlate å avsløre viktige fakta om fartøyet og dets holdbarhet før ekspedisjonen.
«Søksmålet hevder videre at selv om Nargeolet hadde blitt utpekt av OceanGate til å være medlem av mannskapet på fartøyet, ble mange av opplysningene om fartøyets feil og mangler ikke avslørt og ble med vilje skjult,» sa advokater for boet hans. en uttalelse.
Nargeolet, kjærlig kalt «Mr. Titanic», hadde tatt mer enn tre dusin turer til rutebåtens vrak før de gikk om bord i den skjebnesvangre OceanGate-senkbåten – inkludert den aller første menneskelige ekspedisjonen som besøkte stedet i 1987.
Nargeolet, som var direktør for undervannsforskning for RMS Titanic, var en erfaren veteran og ville ikke ha deltatt i Titan-ekspedisjonen hvis OceanGate hadde vært mer gjennomsiktig, hevder drakten.
«Avdøde Nargeolet kan ha dødd når han gjorde det han elsket å gjøre, men hans død – og døden til de andre Titan-besetningsmedlemmene – var urettmessig,» hevdes det i søksmålet.
En talsperson for OceanGate nektet å kommentere saken. De må svare på klagen i løpet av de kommende ukene, heter det i rettspapirene.
Titan-nedsenkbaren hadde satt av gårde om morgenen 18. juni 2023, men mistet kontakten med støttefartøyet omtrent to timer senere.
Vraket ble senere funnet på havbunnen omtrent 984 fot fra Titanic.
I tillegg til Nargeolet, drepte implosjonen OceanGate CEO og medgründer Stockton Rush; den britiske eventyreren Hamish Harding; og pakistansk far og sønn, Shahzada og Suleman Dawood.
