Wall Street falt onsdag, ledet ned av megacap-aksjer da statsrentene steg og investorene ble mindre sikre på utsiktene for sterke rentekutt fra Federal Reserve, mens bedriftsnyhetene presset McDonald’s og Coca-Cola.
Dow Jones Industrial Average falt mer enn 600 poeng før de endte ned 409 poeng, eller 1 % til 42 514,95. Det var blue-chip-indeksens verste dag på over en måned.
S&P 500 tapte 0,9 prosent, og Nasdaq falt 1,6 prosent. Dow og benchmark og S&P 500 logger sin tredje dag på rad med nedgang.
Referanserenten på amerikanske statsobligasjoner på 10 år nådde et tremåneders høydepunkt med investorer som revurderte utsiktene for Fed-rentekutt i løpet av de neste månedene på bakgrunn av sterke økonomiske data og det kommende presidentvalget.
«Det som driver ting mer enn noe annet er sikkerhetskopieringen av ratene,» sa Thomas Martin, senior porteføljeforvalter, Globalt Investments, og legger til at jo nærmere valgkampen kommer, vil markedene sannsynligvis bli mer nervøse.
Kurssensitive megacaps fikk et slag, med Nvidia ned 2,8 % og Apple 2,2 %, trakk informasjonsteknologiaksjene 1,7 % lavere og trakk på den teknologifylte Nasdaq.
McDonald’s falt 5 % etter at en E. coli-infeksjon knyttet til deres Quarter Pounder-hamburgere drepte én og gjorde mange syke.
Coca-Cola falt 2,1 % etter at selskapet gjentok sin årlige prognose for resultatvekst til tross for at de forventet høyere inntekter.
«Du må også balansere det faktum at det amerikanske aksjemarkedet er dyrt på en verdsettelsesbasis, så vi kan (være) grunn for profitttaking,» sa Michael O’Rourke, markedsstrateg i JonesTrading.
Amerikanske markeder er nær rekordhøye nivåer, men en kombinasjon av inntjening, endrede pengepolitiske utsikter og det kommende presidentvalget vil teste bærekraften til det siste rallyet og kan utløse noe volatilitet i markedet, sa analytikere.
Richmond Fed-president Thomas Barkin sa at sentralbankens kamp for å få tilbake inflasjonen til målet på 2 % kan ta lengre tid enn forventet, noe som begrenser rentekutt.
Boeing falt 1,8 % etter å ha rapportert et kvartalsvis tap på 6 milliarder dollar på grunn av en lammende streik.
Fabrikkarbeidere hos den urolige flymakeren vil senere på dagen stemme over et nytt kontraktsforslag som kan avslutte den mer enn fem uker lange konflikten.
I mellomtiden reduserte Starbucks bratte tap før markedet til å stige 0,9 % etter å ha suspendert sin årlige prognose på tirsdag.
Halvlederselskapet Texas Instruments økte med 4 % etter resultatprognosene for tredje kvartal, mens AT&T steg 3,8 % etter å ha fått flere trådløse abonnenter enn forventet i tredje kvartal.
