Ex-University of Kentucky-studenten fanget på viral video som angrep en svart student mens han avfyrte et arsenal av rasistiske utsagn – inkludert N-ordet mer enn 200 ganger – har erkjent seg skyldig i anklager om overgrep, ifølge en rapport.
Sophia Rosing, 23, erkjente seg skyldig i fire tilfeller av overgrep i fjerde grad, ett tilfelle av ordensforstyrrelser og en telling av offentlig rus i en Fayette County Circuit Court på mandag, fortalte hennes advokat, Fred Peters, til Lexington Herald-Leader. Mandag.
Skyldbekjennelsen kom etter en mekling, der Peters sa: «Mange ting ble sagt, unnskyldninger ble gjort og vi klarte det.»
«Livet hennes har vært på vent de siste 18 til 20 månedene,» sa advokaten til avisen. «Hun har hatt mye tid til å tenke på hva hun har gjort, og hun skrev et fint brev med unnskyldning.»
Rosing skal ha sparket, slått og bitt den 19 år gamle studentarbeideren Kylah Spring mens hun gjentatte ganger kalte henne N-ordet i en beruset tirade på et universitetshjem 6. november 2022.
Spring hadde tidligere sagt at hun prøvde å sjekke Rosing, som virket beruset og trengte hjelp, men i stedet ble angrepet av studenten og kastet med motbydelig vitriol, forklarte hun i en TikTok-video av møtet.
«Jenta begynner å si ting som «Gjør mine oppgaver», «Det er ikke min feil at du er svart», «Det er ikke min feil at du er stygg», og på dette tidspunktet er hun som å synge N-ordet, sa Spring etter overfallet.
Den tidligere britiske studenten fortsatte sin grufulle oppførsel da politiet ankom og la henne i håndjern, hvor hun angivelig skal ha sparket og bet den arresterende offiseren under den berusede smellen.
Etter arrestasjonen hennes satte en dommer kausjonen hennes til 10 000 dollar, som hun postet. Hun ble løslatt dagen etter.
Overgrepet sent på kvelden ble fanget på video og lagt ut på nettet, hvor det gikk viralt og utløste raseri av raseri, og fikk studenter ved universitetet til å holde et «March Against Racism»-møte på campus.
Den berusede Rosing ble hørt si N-ordet mer enn 200 ganger i løpet av den 10 minutter lange videoen, rapporterte Lexington Herald-Leader.
University of Kentucky utestengt Rosing permanent fra campus etter det rasistiske angrepet.
I februar 2023 ble Rosing tiltalt av en storjury i Fayette County på alle seks anklagene hun først sto overfor – inkludert overgrep og forbrytelse av en politimann. Hun erkjente ikke straffskyld.
Siden tiltalen har Rosings sak blitt vedtatt fem ganger, og i løpet av den tiden har begge parter forsøkt å komme til en løsning, sa Peters til avisen.
Peters fortalte utsalgsstedet at den tidligere forretnings- og markedsføringssjefen nå står overfor 12 måneder i fengsel, 100 timers samfunnstjeneste og en bot på 25 dollar etter at hun erklærte seg skyldig.
Hun er satt til å bli dømt 17. oktober.
Etter mandagens høring snakket Spring, som var til stede for erkjennelsen om skyld, med LEX 18 og avslørte at hun og Rosing hadde en mulighet til å snakke under meklingen.
«Jeg fortalte henne at hun ikke brøt ånden min,» fortalte Spring til avisen.
«Det var en av tingene jeg sa første gang jeg snakket om det som skjedde, og det stemmer i dag.»
Peters fortalte også utsalgsstedet at klienten hans var «ekstremt anger», og «hun leste en veldig dyp unnskyldning til Kylah under meklingen vår».
Våren kjøpte det imidlertid ikke.
«Jeg føler at en person som angrer tar handlinger som beveger seg mot å bevise at de angrer,» sa Spring til LEX 18. «Ikke bare ord.»
Spring hevdet at Rosing ikke nevnte raseuttalelsene hun brukte mot henne under høringen, som hun sa fortsatt kan ta henne «litt modning og utpakking» for å komme til enighet med.
«Jeg tror at hun innrømmer i det minste en del av det hun har gjort – å innrømme tingene hun sa og være i stand til å eie opp til dem, jeg tror det kommer til å følge etter,» sa Spring til avisen.
«Å se deg selv handle i det lyset er ikke en lett ting å se, innbiller jeg meg, så jeg antar at det fortsatt er litt modning og utpakking hun trenger å gjøre med det. Så jeg skal gi henne plass til å gjøre det.»
Likevel sa Spring at hun har tilgitt Rosing og ble oppdratt til å «ikke bære nag».
«Jeg tilgir henne mer for meg selv,» forklarte Spring.
«Jeg ble oppdratt til å ikke bære nag, jeg ble oppdratt til at vi gir folk tilgivelse fordi Gud tilga oss. Det er en vanskelig ting for meg å forsone meg med, men til syvende og sist vil jeg leve et liv der folk kan si at jeg var en snill og tilgivende person.»
