Hundrevis av brannmenn i Hellas jobber med å begrense en massiv skogbrann som antente nær Athen i løpet av helgen, og tjenestemenn ber innbyggerne om å flykte mens intense flammer sluker hjem og sviende trær langs det historiske landskapet.
Det greske departementet for klimakrise og sivilbeskyttelse har gitt konstante oppdateringer siden skogbrannene startet og sa at sterk vind, langvarige tørkeforhold og utformingen av terrenget gjør arbeidet med å begrense og slukke flammene ekstremt vanskelig og farlig.
Nesten 700 brannmenn, 27 skogkommandoteam, 190 kjøretøyer og frivillige jobber alle med å begrense en massiv brann som brøt ut søndag ettermiddag nær Varnava, nordøst for Athen.
I tillegg har bulldosere blitt utplassert over Attica, regionen i Hellas som inkluderer Athen, for å lage brannskiller, og minst 33 fly dumper nådeløst vann på brannen.
Sykehus i regionen er også i beredskap, og minst 15 personer, inkludert brannmenn, er skadet, ifølge tjenestemenn.
Samfunn over hele regionen har også fått beskjed om å være forberedt på mulig evakuering på grunn av brannene, med innbyggere i flere byer allerede bedt om å flykte.
