En mor fra Florida som ryddet opp søppel etter at orkanen Debby oppdaget en melding i en flaske fra nesten 80 år siden som hadde et kulehus inni – og potensielt reist mer enn 800 miles.
Seddelen fra andre verdenskrig hadde US Navy brevpapir fra Amphibious Training Base i Little Creek, Va., datert 4. mars 1945, og ble oppdaget av Suzanne Flament-Smith denne uken på den vestlige bredden av Tampa Bay.
Flament-Smith fortalte WTSP at hun ikke orket alt søppelet langs Bayshore Boulevard i byen Safety Harbor etter en stormflo fra orkanen da hun bestemte seg for å begynne å plukke søppel onsdag.
«På den tredje posen min, mens jeg fylte den opp, la jeg merke til en glassflaske, og du kunne se skriften, lappen og skriftstedet,» sa hun. «Jeg tenkte: ‘Herregud, jeg tror jeg nettopp fant en melding i en flaske.'»
Flasken hadde kulehuset, noen få skjell, sand og en «minikanonkule», rapporterte stasjonen.
Den inkluderte også bokstaven som ble skrevet ut i kursiv på et gammelt stykke papir, selv om en god del av ordene var falmet.
«Barna mine er som, ‘Hva slags skrift er det?’ Jeg er sånn: ‘Det er kursivt’» sa hun til WAVY.
Notatet ser ut til å være adressert til en venn ved navn Lee med skriften som forklarer planene deres om å gå på radioskole, sa Flament-Smith.
Basen der brevet kan ha kommet fra, heter nå Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story.
Basen ble etablert under andre verdenskrig for å forberede amfibiske styrker som soldatene som landet på strendene i Normandie under D-dagen, fortalte marineoffiser April Phillips til WTSP.
Sjøforsvaret fortalte stasjonen fredag at den ikke kan autentisere brevet fordi det ikke har etternavn, men det er mulig at brevhodet på lappen eksisterte i mars 1945.
Likevel håper Flament-Smith at mysteriet rundt brevet er løst.
«Vel, jeg prøver å fortelle barna mine at hvis dere gjør gode ting, skjer gode ting,» sa hun.
«Det er en følelse av spenning, og også som en historie, en historie som vi forhåpentligvis kan finne sitt hjem.»
