Franske statsborgere i New York møtte lørdag opp i hopetall for den andre valgomgangen i Frankrikes parlamentariske omvalg.
Hundrevis av mennesker stemte personlig på lørdag, og dukket også opp på konsulatet på den tony private skolen Lycée Français de New York på East 75th Street og nettverks- og kunstrommet Villa Albertine på Fifth Avenue, fortalte franske tjenestemenn til The Post.
Avstemningen foregår også på nettet, sa konsulattjenestemenn. I tillegg fikk borgere også lov til å søke om å få noen de stoler på å stemme på dem ved fullmektig i Frankrike.
Marine Le Pens høyrenasjonalistiske parti National Rally kom ut på toppen av avstemningen i første runde sist søndag, etterfulgt av en koalisjon av sentrum-venstre-, venstre- og grønne partier – og president Emmanuel Macrons sentrumsallianse i en fjern tredjedel.
Partiet har sett sin støtte stige jevnt det siste tiåret og håper å oppnå absolutt flertall i andre runde. Det ville tillate National Rally-leder Jordan Bardella å bli statsminister og danne en regjering som ville være i strid med Macrons politikk på Ukraina, politimakter og andre spørsmål.
Forhåndsmålinger tyder på at partiet kan vinne flest seter i nasjonalforsamlingen, men kommer under et absolutt flertall på 289 seter. Det kan resultere i et uthengt parlament.
En seier for Le Pen ville bety at Frankrike ville bli styrt av et ekstremt høyre flertall for første gang siden andre verdenskrig.
I New York stemte mer enn 12.000 franske borgere, av de 32.600 som bor i Big Apple og registrerte seg for å stemme, ifølge Victoire Caroly, en talsperson for det franske konsulatet i New York.
Det er en betydelig økning fra de 4700 som stemte i det franske parlamentsvalget i 2022, da det
var 25 700 franske velgere i byen.
«Vi hadde et fantastisk oppmøte,» sa Caroly.
Resultatet av avstemningen er ventet sent søndag.
