Barna forlater i disse dager den pålitelige søkemotoren til fordel for sosiale medier og andre uortodokse metoder for nettbasert forskning.
Ved å hente data fra en undersøkelse fra april 2024 av 2000 amerikanere utført av Forbes Advisor og Talker Research, rapporterte Bernstein at 45 % av Gen Z-brukere har større sannsynlighet for å bruke søkefunksjoner på sosiale medier i stedet for Google, mens 35 % av millennials, 20 % av Gen X og mindre enn 10 % av Boomers gjorde det samme, per Fortune.
«Yngre publikummer «søker», ikke «googler»,» skrev Mark Shmulik, analytiker hos Bernstein, i et notat fredag, melder Fortune. «Og de går i økende grad til sosiale medier som TikTok for restaurantanbefalinger, direkte til skalerte aggregatorer som Amazon for detaljhandel, og generative AI-søk som ChatGPT for å få leksene sine gjort.»
På plattformer som TikTok gir et søk etter en oppskrift, DIY-prosjekt eller restaurantanbefalinger hundrevis om ikke tusenvis av videoer. Unge mennesker, sa Googles senior visepresident Prabhakar Raghavan på en konferanse i 2022, ser etter «et sted for lunsj» på sosiale medier – «de går ikke til Google Maps eller Søk.»
Skiftet er delvis fordi Zoomers føler at skaperne er mer autentiske, objektive og pålitelige. På TikTok, «ser du hvordan personen faktisk følte om hvor de spiste,» sa Nailah Roberts, 25, til The New York Times i 2022.
I 2016 sa bare omtrent 40 % av Gen Z at de brukte sosiale medier som en primær metode for søk, men i 2023 hoppet tallet til 53 %, rapporterte Fortune, med henvisning til data fra GWI Core.
Den unge generasjonen er allerede avhengig av sosiale apper som TikTok som en primær nyhetskilde, og stoler på at favorittinfluenserne deres informerer dem om verdensbegivenheter eller store popkulturøyeblikk, noe som signaliserer et skifte i måten brukere konsumerer media på.
For å holde tritt med konkurransen forpliktet Raghavan seg til en ny «reise» inn i «visuelle bildeformer.»
Ifølge Fortune investerte Google i teknologi, for eksempel selskapets augmented reality-briller eller «Ask Photos»-funksjonen som lar brukere spørre om detaljer i bilder.
«Gen Zers har også vokst opp i et relativt modent Internett,» sa Shmulik.
«Det er en annen natur for disse brukerne å gå direkte til kilden … Denne verdenen er ikke stor og skummel, den er bare hjemmet for Gen Z.»
