Den generiske versjonen av den populære forkjølelses- og allergimedisinen Mucinex som selges som et butikkmerke hos CVS, Walmart, Target og Walgreens inneholder det kreftfremkallende kjemiske benzenet, ifølge en rapport.
Benzen, en fargeløs, brennbar væske som har blitt brukt til å lage plast, syntetiske fibre, husholdningsrengjøringsmidler, bensin og gummi, har vært knyttet til sykdommer som leukemi og lymfom.
Merkeversjonen av Mucinex, som selges av den britiske farmasøytiske giganten Reckitt Benckiser Group, bruker et hvitt pulver kalt karbomer, som skaper den utvidede frigjøringseffekten som hjelper til med å lindre symptomene over en 12-timers periode, som en inaktiv ingrediens som gjør det. inneholder ikke benzen.
Men en analyse fra Bloomberg News fant at karbomeren som brukes til å lage de generiske versjonene som selges av de store detaljapotekene i USA, faktisk inneholder benzen.
Alle de fire store kjedene henter medisinen fra Amneal Pharmaceuticals, et New Jersey-basert selskap, ifølge Bloomberg News.

«Våre butikkmerkeprodukter er utviklet for å være trygge og av høy kvalitet, fungere etter hensikten, overholde forskrifter og tilfredsstille kunder,» sa en talsperson for CVS til The Post.
CVS sa at det krever at leverandørene «overholder alle lover og forskrifter og er forpliktet til å følge FDAs veiledning.»
«Når du setter opp et medikament eller kosmetisk produkt, må leverandører av CVS-butikkmerker bekrefte at verken deres råmateriale eller ferdige produkt inneholder benzen,» sa CVS-representanten.
Selskapets talsperson sa at «vi jobber med leverandøren for å erstatte» karbomer som finnes i slimlindringsmedisinen.
Bloombergs analyse fant også at karbomerer som inneholder benzen ble brukt til å lage Walgreens versjon av den orale smertestillende midlet Anbesol, Walmarts Equate ansiktsfuktighetskrem med solkrem og Rite Aids versjon av Bengay muscle rub.
Food and Drug Administration forsøkte i fjor å få farmasøytiske selskaper til å fase ut bruken av benzen innen 2025, men bransjeprotester førte til at byrået utvidet fristen til 2026.
«FDA jobber kontinuerlig for å sikre at alle legemidler oppfyller de høyeste kvalitetsstandardene med helse og velvære til amerikanere i fokus,» sa Amanda Hils, en talsperson for byrået, til Bloomberg News.
Tidligere i år begjærte et privat laboratorium basert i New Haven, Conn., Centers for Disease Control and Prevention etter at det sa at det testet 66 forskjellige produkter, inkludert aknekremer som Clearasil og ansiktsvask, og fant «uakseptabelt høye» nivåer av benzen .
I 2021 kunngjorde Johnson & Johnson at de tilbakekalte fem av sine Neutrogena og Aveeno spray solkremer etter at selskapet fant lave nivåer av benzen i noen av prøvene.
Forbrukerne svarte med å inngi et gruppesøksmål.
Året etter kunngjorde Banana Boat at de tilbakekalte tre partier av solkremen for hår og hodebunn etter at tester fant ut at produktene inneholdt spormengder av benzen.
Uker senere ble mer enn to dusin populære tørrsjampo-aerosolprodukter solgt av den multinasjonale giganten Unilever tilbakekalt på grunn av «potensielt forhøyede nivåer av benzen.»
Benzen har også blitt funnet i kunstige fargestoffer og søtningsmidler som brukes til å lage populære snacks og frokostblandinger som Lucky Charms, Froot Loops, Skittles, Nerds, M&M’s og Doritos.
