En Google-leder skrøt til medarbeidere. Målet for selskapets spirende nettannonseringsvirksomhet i 2009 var å «knuse» rivaler i det digitale annonsemarkedet, ifølge bevis som ble presentert onsdag under den storslåtte føderale antitrust-rettsaken rettet mot tech-titanen.
Justisdepartementet fremhevet bemerkninger fra David Rosenblatt, Googles tidligere president for displayannonsering, under den tredje dagen av rettssaken uten jury, som påstår at Google misbrukte sin kontroll over digital markedsteknologi for å suge inn inntekter fra utgivere og annonsører.
«Vi vil være i stand til å knuse de andre nettverkene, og det er målet vårt,» sa Rosenblatt angående Googles strategi på den tiden, ifølge dokumenter som ble gjennomgått i retten.
FB hevder at Google driver en «trifecta av monopoler» gjennom sin kontroll over verktøy på kjøps- og salgssiden av digitale annonseavtaler, samt markedsplassen som kobler bedrifter til annonsører. Google tapper mer enn en tredjedel av hver dollar brukt gjennom annonseplattformene sine, ifølge DOJs klage.
I notatene som ble diskutert under rettssaken, skrøt Rosenblatt, som ble med Google etter det nå kontroversielle oppkjøpet av digital annonseprogramvarefirmaet DoubleClick i 2007, av fordelen ved selskapets kontroll over verktøy på alle sider av annonseøkosystemet.
«Vi er både Goldman og NYSE. … Google har laget det som kan sammenlignes med NYSE eller London Stock Exchange; med andre ord, vi vil gjøre for å vise hva Google gjorde for å søke,” skrev Rosenblatt.
Rosenblatt innrømmet også at det var et «mareritt» for utgivere å prøve å bytte til andre annonseplattformer og sa at det «kreves en handling fra Gud for å gjøre det,» ifølge rettsdokumentene.
På vitnebordet fortalte tidligere Google-sjef Brad Bender retten at han hadde videresendt Rosenblatts notater til teamet sitt på det tidspunktet og beskrev dem som en «verdig lesning».
Digital annonsering utgjør hoveddelen av Googles totale inntekter, som oversteg 307 milliarder dollar bare i fjor.
Rettssaken vil bli avgjort av den amerikanske tingrettsdommeren Leonie Brinkema – som sprengte Google under en forhåndsrettssak for å ha implementert en policy som automatisk slettet ansattes chatoppføringer den burde ha bevart.
DOJ har bedt retten om å bryte opp Googles adtech-virksomhet – inkludert en tvungen avhendelse av Ad Manager-produktet.
Google har hevdet at DOJs sak er basert på en misforståelse av hvordan det digitale annonsemarkedet fungerer. Den hevder også at retten vil risikere å forårsake kaos i det digitale annonsemarkedet og styrke andre rivaler som Amazon og Meta hvis den griper inn i saken.
Prøveperioden for digital annonsering er bare én hodepine for Google. Forrige måned avgjorde en føderal dommer i en egen sak at Google driver et ulovlig monopol på nettsøk.
DOJ forventes på samme måte å forfølge en oppløsning av Google under rettsfasen av den saken.
