Hellas’ verste skogbrann i året har etterlatt én kvinne død da den fortsatte å brenne i utkanten av hovedstaden Athen tirsdag, selv om mildere vind og brannslokkingsarbeid bidro til å redusere intensiteten, sa myndighetene.
Hundrevis av brannmenn støttet av seks vannbombefly kjempet mot brannen som brøt ut søndag nær landsbyen Varnavas 35 km (20 miles) nord for Athen.
Brennet av stormende vind spratt mandag fra et kupert område inn i forstedene, og satte fyr på boliger og skapte panikk i nabolag som ikke hadde sett en slik brann så nær sentrum på flere tiår.
«Trettifem år som bodde her, en brann hadde aldri nådd dette området,» sa Meletis Makris, en 65 år gammel pensjonist i Vrilissia.
Statsminister Kyriakos Mitsotakis ventes å lede et ministermøte senere tirsdag. Den greske regjeringen har varslet kompensasjon og hjelpetiltak for de som har mistet hjem eller eiendom.
Brannen nådde forstaden Vrilissia, rundt 14 km (8 miles) fra Athen sentrum mandag ettermiddag, hvor en 64 år gammel kvinne ble funnet død inne på en fabrikk, sa vitner.
Årsaken til skogbrannen er foreløpig ikke fastslått, men de voldsomme flammene som ble sett mandag hadde stilnet og den tykke røyken som dekket Athen sentrum, hadde stort sett lettet.
«Det er ingen aktiv front, men spredte utbrudd,» sa klimakrise- og sivilbeskyttelsesminister Vassilis Kikilias i en TV-uttalelse.
VIND Å TA OPP
Det var imidlertid ventet at kulingen skulle ta seg opp igjen senere tirsdag, og landet vil forbli på høy brannalarm frem til torsdag, med sterk vind og temperaturer som er spådd å nå opp til 40 grader Celsius (104 grader Fahrenheit).
Skogbranner har vært et vanlig trekk ved greske somre i årevis – dens dødeligste brann tok livet av 104 mennesker i kystbyen Mati i 2018. Men klimaendringene har ført til varmere vær og mindre regn, ideelle forhold for omfattende branner.
Det søreuropeiske landet opplevde sin varmeste vinter som er registrert i år og var på vei mot sin varmeste sommer, med lite regn i mange områder i flere måneder.
«Brannbrannen hadde alle egenskapene som vi som brannmenn ikke ønsker at en skogbrann skal ha. En kombinasjon av varmt, tørt og vind (forhold),» sa Nikos Lavranos, leder av den greske føderasjonen av brannvesenets ansatte, til gresk TV.
«Det var ekstremt aggressivt, vanskelig å håndtere og uforutsigbart,» sa han.
Bål i varmt vær har brutt ut over hele Sør-Europa denne sommeren, inkludert i Spania og på Balkan.
‘INGENTING IGJEN’
Hellas nasjonale observatorium sa at satellittbilder viste at brannen hadde skadet rundt 24 710,54 dekar (10 000 hektar) land. Lokalavisen Proto Thema sa at den inkluderte 100 hjem.
Beboere og brannmenn returnerte til noen områder i det nordlige Athen tirsdag for å vurdere skadene – kjøkken og stuer svertet av brann, tak falt inn, biler redusert til sotete rammer.
«Huset mitt ble fullstendig ødelagt, til og med veggene falt ned. Det er ingenting igjen, sier Sakis Morfis, 70, en innbygger i Vrilissia. «Det eneste jeg brydde meg om var å redde hundene mine, så jeg la alt (annet) bak seg.»
Mer enn 30 områder ble tvunget til å evakuere, sammen med minst tre sykehus, med strømbrudd i deler av den større Athen-regionen.
Hellas har aktivert den europeiske sivilbeskyttelsesmekanismen og forventer bistand fra Frankrike, Italia og Tsjekkia med fly og brannmenn. Spania og Tyrkia har også tilbudt hjelp.
Tiltakene som ble annonsert av klimakrisen og sivilbeskyttelsesdepartementet tirsdag inkluderer husleiesubsidier, treårig fritak for eiendomsskatt og økonomisk støtte til å gjenopprette ødelagte hjem og bedrifter.
Opposisjonspartiene anklaget regjeringen for ikke å gjøre nok for å forhindre katastrofen. Syriza, det venstreorienterte opposisjonspartiet, stilte spørsmål ved antallet fly som kjempet mot brannen.
Det sosialistiske Pasok-partiet sa at grekerne betalte prisen for dårlig brannforebyggende politikk.
