AURORA, Colorado – Alt som skulle til for at deler av denne Denver-forstaden skulle komme ned i en migrant-ødemark – med voldelige gjengskytinger, menn som frekt med våpen i det fri, narkotikahandel og skutt opp biler – var at noen leilighetsbygg ramlet inn i forfall.
Aurora har blitt kastet inn i det nasjonale øyet – til og med sitert av tidligere president Trump i tirsdagskveldens debatt – takket være medlemmer av den voldelige venezuelanske fengselsgjengen Tren de Aragua, som har gjort soveromsfellesskapet på 390 000 til en krigssone.
Bandangerne har brukt forskjellige falleferdige leilighetskomplekser – som det der Aurora-innfødte Jessica Montenegro og hennes unge familie ble tvunget til å flykte – som hjemmebase, og terroriserte innbyggerne der med våpenkriminalitet, tyveri og narkotikahandel.
«Vi var redde for å bli der, og vi visste at det kom til å bli verre,» sa et rystet Montenegro nylig til The Post.
I flere uker benektet lokale tjenestemenn at gjengen opererte i Aurora, og avviste det som et engangsproblem.
Etter at The Post avslørte at en topp Tren de Aragua-leder med kallenavnet «Cookie» var basert i Aurora, identifiserte politiet onsdag offentlig 10 mistenkte medlemmer av gjengen som har blitt arrestert de siste månedene for å ha terrorisert byen.
Montenegro og hennes ektemann feide opp de tre barna sine og stakk av fra The Edge at Lowry-komplekset etter et opprivende møte – en mann med en pistol i linningen banket på døren til leiligheten deres på 1200 dollar i måneden en dag og prøvde å komme seg inn.
«Nå som jeg tenker [about it]det er virkelig skummelt for meg, ikke bare for meg, men for barna mine,” sa moren på 35, som har to barn i ungdomsskolen og en 10 måneder gammel. «Jeg kunne ikke forestille meg hva som kunne ha skjedd hvis jeg fortsatt var der.»
Gjengemedlemmer strømmet inn i Aurora med en bølge av venezuelanske migranter fra Denver – helligdomsbyen ved siden av, som har tatt imot mer enn 42 000 migranter siden 2022 – de fleste fra det politisk ustabile søramerikanske landet.
Dette til tross for at tjenestemenn i Aurora sa at de ikke ville gi støtte til noen asylsøkere.
«Vi er ikke en grensestat, men vi håndterer konsekvensene av en mislykket immigrasjonspolitikk og prøver å gjøre vårt beste i å prøve å holde våre innbyggere trygge og innvandrere,» distriktsadvokat John Kellner, som fører tilsyn med Aurora og et stort område. av Denver-forstedene, fortalte The Post.
Blant Tren de Aragua-medlemmene som ble navngitt av Aurora-politiet på onsdag, er Jhonardy Jose Pacheco-Chirinos, som går etter «Galleta» – spansk for «Cookie.» Kilder til Homeland Security fortalte The Post at han er en «shot-call» for Tren de Araguas aktiviteter i Aurora-området. Måneder etter å ha krysset den sørlige grensen, skal Pacheco-Chirinos og andre gjengmedlemmer ha slått brutalt en mann ved leilighetskomplekset Aurora.
Han ble arrestert og deretter løslatt, men det tok ikke lang tid før han fortsatte med en ny voldshandling, sier politiet.
I juli arresterte politiet ham igjen sammen med broren Jhonnarty Dejesus Pacheco-Chirinos – også et Trend de Aragua-medlem – denne gangen for en skyting på det samme komplekset som etterlot to menn såret.
De fleste av gjengmedlemmene identifisert av Aurora-politiet ble knust ved byens ødelagte leilighetsbygg, der søppel og knuste flasker ligger i gangene.
En Aurora-eier fortalte til The Post at gjengen benyttet seg av ledige stillinger – og ville flytte inn i tomme enheter og overta. Deretter hadde de truet vedlikeholdsarbeidere og ansatte som prøvde å rydde opp i leilighetene, sa kilden.
Som svar har byen lukket to leilighetskomplekser og tvunget eieren av to av de verste kriminalitetshottene til å gi opp kontrollen over bygningene.
Montenegros gamle leilighetskompleks, på Dallas Street, har blitt den mest beryktede av byens leilighetsblokker – mortbefengt, dårlig vedlikeholdt og omgitt av biler uten bilskilt og andre med kulehull.
I månedene før familien flyktet, begynte Montenegro å høre skudd, slåsskamper og høy musikk hver kveld. Dråpen var det skremmende møtet med den væpnede mannen ved døren hennes.
I august, to måneder etter at de flyttet ut av leiligheten med ett soverom, dukket det opp en viral video av tungt bevæpnede menn – mistenkte medlemmer av Tren de Aragua – som banket på inngangsdøren til den gamle enheten hennes og prøvde å komme seg inn.
«Det er ikke trygt der, spesielt hvis du har barn. Du kan høre skudd, barna mine pleide å gå til skolen, men de kunne ikke føle seg trygge lenger, sa hun.
«Jeg tror det var den riktige avgjørelsen å flytte derfra.»
Politiet har ikke foretatt noen arrestasjoner fra hendelsen i Montenegros gamle leilighet.
Tren de Aragua gjengvold oppsluker ikke bare Aurora. I Denver tok Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office fire personer knyttet til gjengen i slutten av august ved Ivy Crossing-leilighetene. Under den bysten beslagla politiet 750 forfalskede piller, ketamin og en stjålet bil.
Sheriff i Arapahoe, Tyler Brown, fortalte til The Post at kontoret hans mottok etterretning og så rapporter «om enkeltpersoner som gikk rundt med skytevåpen og narkotikatransaksjoner» og gikk i gang.
Sheriffens stedfortreder Christopher Calderon tok The Post med på en tur der operasjonen skjedde – et område han sa har «endret seg ganske mye gjennom årene, med innvandrere fra forskjellige land som flyttet hit.»
Imidlertid blir mye underrapportert fordi migrantmiljøet er redd for rettshåndhevelse takket være korrupsjon i deres hjemland, sa Calderon.
«De er veldig redde for gjengjeldelse, de vil ikke snakke,» sa Calderon.
Beboere og lokale tjenestemenn sa at Aurora-politiet har bagatellisert gjengproblemet.
En beboer som bor i nærheten av Montenegros gamle bygning sa at han er redd for gjengjeldelse og ba om anonymitet for å snakke fritt om trusselen.
Den naboen fortalte The Post at Aurora-politiet – som nettopp ønsket velkommen til en ny sjef – har ikke respondert på henvendelsene deres om skuddene og ekstremt høy musikk som spilles hele natten.
«Jeg har ringt politiet 20 ganger den siste måneden eller to, og de kommer aldri ut,» sa naboen.
Han sa at han føler seg «helt» hjelpeløs.
«De er langt ute av kontroll,» la naboen til.
Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly, hvis nærliggende fylke ennå ikke har sett slik gjengaktivitet, sa til The Post «Aurora politiavdelingen har minimert dette problemet.»
«De trenger noen som er villig til å gå inn der, rette opp i rotet, være engasjert i samfunnet og løse kriminalitet og arrestere skurker, holde kriminelle ansvarlige,» sa Weekly. «Det har de ikke hatt. Det har vært et rot.»
