CNN-verten Jake Tapper hostet opp et kompliment for senator JD Vance, og kalte hans oratoriske ferdigheter «slikere» enn de til hans demokratiske rival, guvernør Tim Walz, etter tirsdagens CBS-verterte visepresidentdebatt.
Mens Tapper nektet å kalle debatten for Vance i CNNs analyse etter debatten, karakteriserte ankeret den 90-minutters TV-sparringøkten som «stort sett hyggelig», men bemerket at den republikanske visepresidentkandidaten var «klart den mer erfarne debattanten.»
«Til tross for måneder med ganske ondskapsfulle og ekle angrep mellom senator Vance og guvernør Walz, var de i kveld stort sett snille og hyggelige med hverandre,» sa Tapper. «Vance helt klart, jeg tror det må sies, helt klart den mer erfarne debattanten, den slankere foredragsholderen.»
Vance, 40, ga en jevn og advokatfull presentasjon av Trump-kampanjens posisjoner og ble av mange sett på som seierherren.
I mellomtiden virket den 60 år gamle Walz nervøs til tider og urolig, og kalte seg selv en «knokehead» under debatten.
Minnesota-guvernøren, som har finpusset en folkelig oppførsel på kampanjesporet, snakket feil til tider mens han tok hektiske notater og så urolig ut i CBSs Broadcasting Studio i Midtown.
«Jeg har blitt venn med skoleskytere,» erklærte Walz – da han så ut til å mene ofre – under et svar om våpenkontroll.
Den katastrofale lydbiten var en av mange flubs av Kamala Harris’ løpekamerat.
«Walz ser rusten og nervøs ut. Kanskje han burde ha gjort noen presseintervjuer for å forberede seg bedre,» twitret Washington Post-spaltist Josh Rogin – og bemerket den relative sparsomheten i Walz’ medieengasjementer.
I følge Mediaite fant en umiddelbar meningsmåling fra CNN at 51 % av seerne hyllet Vance som vinneren mot 49 % for Walz.
Walz’ ytelse falt under seernes forventninger, ettersom 54 % hadde spådd en Walz-seier før debatten mot bare 45 % for Vance, rapporterte utsalgsstedet.
