GOP veep nominert og Ohio Sen. JD Vance på søndag doblet ned på å pedle tvilsomme påstander om haitiske migranter spiser kjæledyr, mens den republikanske guvernøren i hjemstaten hans avviste påstanden.
«De amerikanske mediene ignorerte dette helt til Donald Trump og jeg begynte å snakke om kattememer,» grep Vance under en vanskelig meningsutveksling på CNNs «State of the Union».

Vance hadde høye påstander om migranter som spiste kjæledyrene til lokalbefolkningen i Springfield, Ohio, før ABC News-debatten mellom tidligere president Donald Trump og visepresident Harris.
Springfield har blitt oversvømmet av en tilstrømning av migranter. Men lokale tjenestemenn der, inkludert ordfører Rob Rue, har benektet påstandene om at disse migrantene har vært engasjert i utstrakt bruk av beboernes kjæledyr.
I forkant av tirsdagens debatt la Trump ut memes som støttet de tvilsomme påstandene.
Så under den verbale sparringskampen eksploderte kontroversen da Trump hevdet «De spiser hundene. De spiser kattene. De spiser kjæledyrene til menneskene som bor der.»
Denne kommentaren trakk en rask faktasjekk fra moderatorene, med anker David Muir som la merke til at byens tjenestemenn hevdet at det ikke var bevis for det.
Video-massh-ups av Trumps fantastiske kommentarer har tatt sosiale medier med storm.
Vance hevdet faktasjekkene av hans og Trumps påstander som «falske avvisninger», og erklærte at grunnlaget for parets påstander er beretninger fra hans velgere.
«Mine velgere har gitt meg omtrent et dusin separate bekymringer. Ti av dem er kontrollerbare,» insisterte Vance.
«Jeg kan ignorere dem, som er hva amerikanske medier har gjort i årevis mot dette samfunnet, eller jeg kan faktisk snakke om hva folk forteller meg.»
Midt i oppstyret har det vært bombetrusler som førte til skolestengninger, samt nedstengning av sykehus i Springfield
«Det er ingenting jeg har sagt som har ført til trusler mot disse sykehusene,» sa Vance mens han sparte med Bash. «Vi fordømmer det. Vi fordømmer all vold og trusler om vold.»
Vance fortalte hvordan medier panorerte påstander om at migranter spiste gjess fra en lokal parkdam, men hvordan det var en 911-samtale som rapporterte det.
Bash svarte med å merke seg at sheriffen i Clark County og Ohio Department of Natural Resources finkjemmet 911-anrop og bare fant to tilfeller av disse anklagene.
Forrige uke understreket Rue overfor det lokale utsalgsstedet WSYX at «alle disse føderale politikerne som har snurt byen vår negativt, de trenger å vite at de skader byen vår, og det var deres ord som gjorde det.»
Vance sa om Rue: «Springfield-ordføreren, han har å gjøre med mange forferdelige ting. Jeg har absolutt sympati med fyren, og vi skal prøve å hjelpe ham.»
I et separat søndagsintervju med «NBCs Meet the Press» hevdet Vance at han ikke fant opp kjæledyrryktene ut av løse luften.
«Vi klandrer ikke de haitiske migrantene for å komme til Springfield. Vi klandrer Kamala Harris for å ha åpnet den amerikanske sørgrensen og invitert 20 000 mennesker til å bli droppet i en liten by i Ohio, sa han.
I mellomtiden bekreftet den republikanske Ohio-guvernøren Mike DeWine, som er tidsbegrenset før guvernørvalget i 2026, at han ikke hadde sett bevis for ryktene om kjæledyrforbruk.
«Ingen. Absolutt ikke. Det er det ordføreren har sagt. Det har politimesteren sagt. Jeg synes det er uheldig at dette — dette kom opp,» sa han til ABC News ‘This Week’ søndag.
«Disse haitierne kom inn for å jobbe for disse selskapene. Det selskapene forteller oss er at de er veldig gode arbeidere. De er veldig glade for å ha dem der. Og ærlig talt, det har hjulpet økonomien,» sa DeWine.
DeWine understreket at det er problemer med migranttilstrømningen til Springfield, inkludert det faktum at mange av dem «ikke har kjørt før.»
Han presset Trump forsiktig mot å hengi seg til «søppel på Internett» og fordømte «hatgruppene som kommer inn i Springfield.
«Jeg tror disse diskusjonene om haitiere som spiser hunder og katter og andre ting må stoppe,» sa han. «Vi må fokusere på å komme oss fremover og ikke at hunder og katter blir spist. Det er bare latterlig.»
Fredag gjentok Trump sitt syn om å ta fatt på den «største deportasjonen i historien til landet vårt» hvis han vinner i valget 5. november.
