Nevrolog Kim Johnson Hatchett har én anbefaling til folk som ønsker å holde hjernen i funksjon nå og etter hvert som de blir eldre – bygge styrke.
Hatchett, som har nesten 9000 TikTok-følgere, ga henne råd om å fortsette å bevege seg for kroppens og hjernens skyld i et nylig innlegg, «Det skumleste jeg ser på som nevrolog er den gradvise svekkelsen av Amerika. Å ikke bevege musklene dine … har en effekt på alle aspekter av livet ditt og viktigst av alt hjernen din.»
I et intervju denne uken med Self delte Hatchett hvordan fysisk aktivitet er tettere knyttet til hjernens helse enn folk er klar over.
«Hver gang du trener, skiller du ut nervevekstfaktor (NGF), et peptid som er involvert i å regulere nevroner i hjernen,» forklarte hun. «Det kan også støtte myelin, den nevrobeskyttende kappen som hjelper nervefibre med å sende elektriske impulser raskt og effektivt og kan degenerere med alderen.»
Hatchett hevder at regelmessig kardio øker blodstrømmen til hjernen, og forbedrer kognitiv funksjon. «Du kan bli overrasket over å vite at selv litt daglig bevegelse reduserer risikoen for demens,» sa hun.
I tillegg sier Hatchett at å spille en sport, ta en treningstime eller bevege kroppen på en måte du aldri har gjort før, er det samme som å lære en ny ferdighet og skaper forbindelser i hjernen din.
Å gjenta disse aktivitetene over tid styrker disse forbindelsene.
«Hvis du ønsker å opprettholde mobiliteten og kognitive evner, er en investering du kan gjøre å trene og bruke musklene dine på daglig basis,» sa hun til Self. «Denne popen av NGF vil bare hjelpe hjernen din til å fungere bedre.»
Hatchett ber pasientene sine om å begynne å bygge styrke med enkle bicep-krøller og stolknebøy, «Etter å ha innlemmet trening i rutinen… vil de ofte komme tilbake mentalt skarpere og utløst av fornyet vitalitet.»
Hatchetts anbefaling støttes av et vell av forskning som tyder på at fysisk aktivitet er nøkkelen til kognitiv velvære.
Tidligere i år ble en studie publisert i Journal of Alzheimers Disease fant at regelmessig trening – selv så lite som noen få tusen skritt – var assosiert med større hjernevolum.
Hjernevolum korrelerer med hjernehelse – mindre volum indikerer kognitiv nedgang og kan deretter føre til demens. Men vedlikehold eller en økning i hjernemasse kan ha «potensielle nevrobeskyttende effekter,» ifølge forskerne.
En annen studie, publisert i Journal of Applied Physiology i fjor, fant det sitter på huk i bare ett minutt hver så ofte under lengre perioder med sittende kan hjelpe kognitipå.
Hatchett forklarer at muskelmassen reduseres med 1 % til 2 % hvert år etter fylte 50 år, og etter 60 år er den 3 % per år. Imidlertid kan folk gjøre endringer i 30- og 40-årene for å bekjempe dette underskuddet.
Hatchett sammenligner disse endringene med en langsiktig investering. «Akkurat nå, i 40-årene, legger jeg penger i 401K for å være sikker på at jeg har det bra økonomisk når det er på tide for meg å pensjonere meg. Det er smart å gjøre den samme typen investering i helsen din, sa hun til Self.
Hun ber pasientene sine sikte på 30 minutter styrketrening tre til fire ganger i uken og 25 til 30 minutter fysisk aktivitet hver dag.
Dette er på nivå med Verdens helseorganisasjons veiledning for voksne om å få minst 150 til 300 minutter med moderat intensitet aerob fysisk aktivitet eller 75 til 150 minutter med kraftig aerob fysisk aktivitet i uken.
Det er Hatchetts håp å inspirere folk til å gjøre den typen endringer som vil gi dem en følelse av selvtillit om aldringsprosessen.
«Til syvende og sist, det jeg skulle ønske folk visste er at du har mer kontroll i aldringsprosessen enn du er klar over!» sa hun til Self. «Å bli svakere etter hvert som du blir eldre er ikke uunngåelig, og regelmessig trening og styrketrening vil gi resultater til slutt.»
