John Lennon og Yoko Ono var «besatt» av vekten sin under deres tid i rampelyset.
Tidligere Los Angeles radio- og TV-kunngjører Elliot Mintz, som var nære venner med Lennon og Ono, hevdet hvordan de var «besatt av å holde seg tynne» i memoarene hans «We All Shine On: John Yoko & Me», som ble utgitt tirsdag.
Mintz, 79, ble venn med paret etter å ha intervjuet Ono, nå 91, for hennes album fra 1971 «Fly». Han har holdt seg nær med den japanske sangeren, så vel som hennes sønn Sean Lennon, siden Johns død i 1980.
«John førte en dagbok hvor han hver dag skrev hva vekten hans var,» påsto Mintz i sin bok om det avdøde Beatles-medlemmet, ifølge People.
«Yoko og John hadde uendelige spørsmål om dette emnet,» la Mintz til.
Mediekonsulenten sa at Lennon en gang ringte ham klokken 04.00 og ba om å hjelpe ham med å finne «slankepiller».
«De trodde at alle i Hollywood var slanke og trimme og at det fantes magiske slankepiller, og insisterte på at jeg skulle få det for dem,» husket Mintz og la til at han ikke gjorde den tjenesten for paret.
Mintz beskrev også Lennon og Onos klesreoler som «som en Manhattan-butikk» og sa at den var organisert «i henhold til midjestørrelse» med «en stor omslagsstige slik at de kunne komme til høyere bokser».
Lennon og Ono hadde «hundrevis av klær, inkludert dusinvis og dusinvis av hatter og briller,» la Mintz til.
«De holdt de forskjellige jeansene og buksedressene sine, uansett hva det måtte være, i forskjellige kategorier av midjestørrelser, 28 [inches] nå til 32 eller så, avhengig av hvordan de oppfattet vekten og hvor stramt buksene sitter», sa han i boken sin.
Parets kjøleskap var angivelig fylt med, i Mintzs ord til FOLK, «ugjenkjennelig» helsekost.
«Kjøleskapet deres var som å gå inn i denne graven av nysgjerrighet,» sa han til utsalgsstedet. «Det var noen ganger disse papirbeholderne, noe som tydet på at det var rester fra kvelden før, og at du ville åpne beholderen og se inn og fortsatt ikke være i stand til å identifisere hva de spiste.»
«Før John lærte å lage mat, var de litt tynne i ernæringsavdelingen,» fortsatte Mintz. «Og Yoko, med all respekt, kjente seg ikke rundt ovnen.»

«Give Peace a Chance»-stjernen ble etterlatt som enke da Lennon ble skutt og drept av Mark David Chapman utenfor leiligheten hans i New York City 8. desember 1980. Han var 40 år gammel.
Parets sønn, Sean, var bare 5 år gammel på tidspunktet for tragedien. Sean er nå 49.
De siste årene har Ono holdt seg unna rampelyset blant rykter om at helsen hennes er på vei ned. I 2020 fortalte en kilde nær staben hennes til The Post at avantgardekunstneren krever pleie døgnet rundt og sjelden forlater sin viltvoksende leilighet i Dakota, som ligger i Upper West Side i NYC.
Mintz, som har fungert som familietalsperson for Ono, fortalte PEOPLE at hans nye memoarer ikke har noe «sint» materiale om Ono og Lennon.
«Hva det er så vidt jeg vet, er en ærlig førstepersons beretning om hvordan det var å tilbringe nesten et tiår av livet mitt med dem, og nå mer enn 50 år med Yoko,» sa han.
