Visepresident Kamala Harris har valgt Minnesota-guvernør Tim Walz som kandidaten hennes i 2024 tirsdag etter å ha erstattet president Biden som Det demokratiske partiets presidentkandidat, sier kilder.
Harris forventes å komme med kunngjøringen til supporterne før duoen vises for første gang sammen på et kampanjearrangement i Philadelphia tirsdag kveld, fortalte fire personer nær prosessen til CNN.
Medlemmer av Harris’ team ble sendt til guvernørens herskapshus i Minnesota for å gratulere ham og fly med ham til Philadelphia for rally, rapporterte uttaket.
Harris ble stadig mer komfortabel med Walz i løpet av de siste dagene av kontrollprosessen – og ble spesielt imponert over hans «happy go lucky»-holdning, sa kilder til CNN.
Walz tilbrakte 24 år i Army National Guard og deretter et tiår i det amerikanske Representantenes hus, og tjente et stort sett landlig distrikt i det sørlige Minnesota, før han stilte som guvernør i 2018.
Demokraten vil sannsynligvis bringe et mer sentristisk bilde til den demokratiske billetten i 2024 etter å ha vunnet sitt guvernørvalg med to sifre, med enda flere stemmer og flere fylker enn Hillary Clinton gjorde i staten under presidentvalget i 2016.
Likevel var hans første utøvende grep som Minnesotas guvernør å lansere en statlig kommisjon for mangfold, rettferdighet og inkludering (DEI), som han fornyet etter å ha blitt gjenvalgt for en ny periode i 2022.
I 2020 fanget Walz også flak fra venstre etter at Minneapolis-ordfører Jacob Frey sa at han var for treg med å utplassere nasjonalgarden for å dempe omfattende opptøyer i byen, som pådro seg 500 millioner dollar i skader på eiendom og plyndring etter George Floyds død.
Konservative kritikere har drevet med hans feilaktige respons under COVID-19-pandemien, som inkluderte å kaste bort mer enn 5 millioner dollar i statlige midler for å kjøpe et kjølelager til et potensielt likhus som forble ledig – og tillate en ordning på 250 millioner dollar som svindlet den føderale regjeringen til Covid-stimulusdollar og utnyttede fattige barn.
Som en Harris-kampanjesurrogat har han spilt den lojale fotsoldaten ved å angripe den republikanske visepresidentkandidaten JD Vance som ute av kontakt med Mellom-Amerika og altfor sosialt konservativ.
Harris måtte velge sin nr. 2 raskt etter at den demokratiske nasjonale komiteen vedtok regler som håndhever en virtuell navneoprop for å utnevne både president- og visepresidentkandidaten den første uken i august.
Hun ble rapportert å ha sparket av undersøkelsesmateriale bare dager etter at Biden suspenderte presidentkampanjen sin forrige måned.
I dagene frem til kunngjøringen hennes, hadde Harris satt seg inn på en trio av potensielle finalister – inkludert Pennsylvania-guvernør Josh Shapiro og Arizona-senator Mark Kelly.
Andre som ble antatt å være på hennes tidlige undersøkelsesliste hadde inkludert North Carolina-guvernør Roy Cooper, Michigan-guvernør Gretchen Whitmer og Illinois-guvernør JB Pritzker.
Andre rapporter indikerte at Harris også hadde veid Kentucky-guvernør Andy Beshear og transportsekretær Pete Buttigieg.
Alle potensielle kandidater hadde kommet ut for å støtte Harris, men Whitmer var den første som sa at hun ikke var interessert i jobben, og la merke til at hun ikke ønsket å forlate stillingen i Michigan og stille til valg i år.
Søndag la Kelly forvirring til Det demokratiske partiets veepstakes da han postet – og deretter raskt slettet – en melding til X der han sa at fokuset hans var på å «tjene Arizonans», og antydet at han ikke var VP-valget.
Det demokratiske partiet samlet seg stort sett rundt Harris i løpet av dager etter at hun godtok Bidens tilslutning til å erstatte ham på toppen av billetten. De rapporterte godkjente kandidatene hadde vært sterke tilhengere av Biden-Harris-billetten og svingte raskt for å kaste vekten sin bak Harris da Biden la ned budet.
En sterk Biden-Harris-forkjemper var Californias guvernør Gavin Newsom, men han kunne ikke bli vurdert fordi han kommer fra samme delstat som Harris.
En visepresidentkandidat fra en svingstat kan gi Harris et ekstra løft fra velgerne i hennes kamp mot tidligere president Donald Trump.
Harris’ kampanje satser på å være mer vellykket med minoritetsvelgere sammenlignet med Trumps rekkevidde, og fortsetter å fokusere på slagmarksstatene Biden håpet å nå.
Den potensielle listen over VP-er kom for det meste fra de målrettede svingstatene.
«Vi fortsetter å fokusere på Blue Wall-statene Michigan, Wisconsin og Pennsylvania – og Sun Belt-statene North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona og Nevada,» sa Harris for presidentformann Jen O’Malley Dillon i en uttalelse i første uke av kampanjeskiftet.
Det kommer etter at Harris offisielt sikret den demokratiske presidentnominasjonen mandag kveld etter å ha mottatt stemmer fra 99 % av DNC-delegatene under en fem-dagers runde med online-avstemning.
Harris var den eneste kandidaten som kvalifiserte seg til den virtuelle elektroniske stemmeseddelen med navneopprop – og fikk mer enn de nødvendige 300 delegatene til å støtte henne.
Etter tirsdagens dagstur til Pennsylvania, skal Harris og løpekameraten hennes bruke de neste dagene på å fly tusenvis av mil rundt i landet mens de turnerer kritiske slagmarkstater.
Noen steder vil de bli fulgt opp av Trumps visepresidentvalg, JD Vance.
Harris’ nr. 2 må kanskje møte i en debatt mot Vance, selv om datoene og logistikken ennå ikke er satt.
