Kjernegrossistprisene unntatt volatile mat- og energipriser steg høyere enn forventet, noe som svekker ytterligere håpet om et rentekutt på 50 basispunkter neste uke.
Den amerikanske regjeringens produsentprisindeks – som sporer kostnadene for varer og tjenester for innenlandske produsenter – steg 0,2 % forrige måned, i tråd med økonomenes forventninger, ifølge en meningsmåling fra The Wall Street Journal.
Imidlertid økte engrosprisene ekskludert volatile matvarer og energi – en beregning som følges nøye av økonomer for å måle underliggende inflasjonstrender – 0,3 % i august fra en måned tidligere, litt over forventningene på 0,2 %.
Amerikanske aksjeindekser forble lite endret torsdag morgen. Dow Jones Industrial Average falt mindre enn 1 prosent. S&P 500 og Nasdaq 100 steg hver mindre enn 1 %.
Arbeidsløse hevder data utgitt torsdag samsvarte med forventningene, med 230 000 søknader om arbeidsledighet ettersom landets arbeidsmarked fortsetter å avkjøles.
Kjerne-KPI-data – et inflasjonsmål som ekskluderer flyktig mat og energi – som ble offentliggjort onsdag steg 3,2 % fra året før og 0,3 % på månedsbasis.
Månedstallet, drevet av hardnakket høye boligkostnader, var litt over forventningene om en 0,2 % oppgang.
Etter kjerneinflasjonsdataene ser tradere nå en 87 % sjanse for at Fed kutte renten med 25 bps når den møtes 17.-18. september, ifølge CMEs FedWatch Tool. Det vil være det første rentekuttet siden mars 2020.
Den ujusterte økningen i engrosprisene det siste året falt til 1,7 % fra 2,1 % i måneden før, og nådde det laveste nivået på seks måneder, ifølge US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
12-månedersrenten steg opp til 3,3 % fra 3,2 %.
Prisen på tjenester steg med 0,4 % i august, noe som ga 12-måneders økning på 2,7 % – nær nivåer før pandemien.
«PPI-dataene for august gir mer oppmuntring for Fed om at inflasjonen har blitt temmet,» sa Paul Ashworth, nordamerikansk sjeføkonom i Capital Economics, til MarketWatch.
Federal Reserve-leder Jerome Powell har antydet at rentekutt kan komme i september hvis inflasjonen fortsetter å avta og arbeidsmarkedet fortsetter å avkjøles.
«Tiden er inne for at politikken skal justeres,» sa Powell i slutten av august.
Sentralbanken har opprettholdt sin referanserente over natten i dagens intervall på 5,25 % – 5,50 % i et år, etter å ha hevet den med 525 basispunkter i 2022 og 2023.
Investorer har håpet at Fed vil utstede et etterlengtet kutt på 50 basispunkter – over det vanlige kuttet på 25 basispunkter – for å lette inflasjonsdataene og et avkjølende arbeidsmarked.
Feds aggressive post-pandemiske renteøkninger i 2022 og 2023 dempet etterspørselen, noe som hemmet ansettelsen og førte til en nedgang i arbeidsmarkedet.
Selv om økonomer spådde at USA ville møte en resesjon etter rekken av renteøkninger, ansporet lette inflasjonen håp om at Fed vil være i stand til å levere en myk landing.
Fed har holdt fast på målet om å få inflasjonsraten ned til 2 %, men investorene hadde håpet at augusts inflasjonsdata ville presse dem til å utstede kuttene under møtet neste uke.
