Forhandleren av billige boligvarer Big Lots avslørte at den planlegger å stenge flere butikker i år og kan stå overfor permanent nedleggelse – den siste store kjeden som står overfor økonomisk ruin ettersom inflasjonsrammede kunder trekker tilbake på utgifter.
Det Ohio-baserte selskapet – som har rundt 1400 butikker over hele landet – avslørte dystre skatterapporter i en SEC-innlevering i juni og sa at de planlegger å stenge mellom 35 og 40 butikker i år, etter at de 52 butikkene stengte i 2023.
Big Lots-rapporten sa at «økt inflasjon» har lagt en demper på kundenes «kjøpekraft» – noe som resulterer i store tap for selskapet og «betydelig tvil» om dets evne til å fortsette driften.
Selskapets nettoomsetning falt med 114,5 millioner dollar, eller 10,2 %, i første kvartal sammenlignet med første kvartal 2023, heter det i rapporten.
Forhandleren har stadig tapt penger og avhengig av synkende kontanter siden 2022, heter det i rapporten, noe som vekker bekymring for konkurs.
Big Lots svarte ikke på forespørsler om kommentarer.
Selskapets aksje har falt 52% den siste måneden og har krateret 82% siden denne tiden i fjor.
Big Lots er ikke den første forhandleren som annonserer massestenginger ettersom fysiske butikker sliter med å holde seg flytende.
Walgreens kunngjorde nylig at det kan stenge opptil 2000 butikker midt i et fallende detaljsalg, mens Red Lobster brått stengte dusinvis av lokasjoner forrige måned og begjærte seg konkurs dager senere.
Drugstore-rivalene CVS og Rite Aid har også annonsert forestående stenging av butikker i år, sammen med forhandlerne Macy’s, Walmart og Foot Locker.
