Tilstrømningen av illegale migranter til Big Apple de siste to årene har betydd en endring i livskvaliteten for arbeidere og innbyggere i postnummer oversvømmet med tilfluktsrom, sa de til The Post.
«Det er overbefolket her [with migrants] og det er en bekymring, sier Maria Katirtzoglou, 38, som jobber for et ingeniørfirma i Long Island City ved siden av et hotell som ble til migranter i Crescent Street.
«Det er en bekymring for folk som er født og oppvokst her, folk som har eiendom her, fordi folk som eier eiendom og så ser alt dette komme inn, de liker det ikke,» sa hun. «Om natten føler jeg meg ikke trygg i dette området … Det er ikke trygt. Ting skjer – ran og kniver, du vet, folk tar ut kniver.»
I 114th Precinct, som dekker det ly-mettede nabolaget der hun jobber, steg ran, overfall og andre rapporterte «større» forbrytelser med 12,3 % i løpet av første halvår i år, sammenlignet med samme periode i 2022 – en sterk forskjell fra 0,5 % nedgang i stor kriminalitet i hele byen over samme tid, viser registreringer.
Klager til byens 311-hotline i postnummeret 11101 har også økt siden Texas-guvernør Greg Abbott våren 2022 begynte å busse ulovlige grenseoverskridere til New York og andre blå stater med fristedspolitikk, med 15 256 innlevert til slutten av juni – 42 % økning fra 10 745 gjort i løpet av de første seks månedene av 2022. Det er 24 tilfluktsrom for migranter i 11101 – inkludert 23 i LIC – det meste av et postnummer i NYC, viser registreringer.
Shawarn Shields, 50, fra Queensbridge Houses, sa at foreldre er redde for å ta barna med til lokale parker og lekeplasser fordi migranter vanligvis kjører elektriske scootere og har sex der.
«Dette er ikke et tredjeverdensland,» sa Shields. «Vi kan ikke bare la hvem som helst komme inn i nabolaget vårt og gjøre hva de vil!»
Stuart Gleiber, 82, og hans sønn Doug, 51, sa at migrant-tilfluktsroms ankomst til LIC er et mageslag for samfunnet.
Siden 1998 har far-sønn-duoen drevet et suksessfullt selskap for produksjon av trebokser fra et kontorbygg de eier på 10th Street.
Men de vurderer nå å flytte etter at et tidligere Holiday Inn rett over gaten begynte å huse migranter. De hevder at deres nye naboer rutinemessig overtar blokken for alle slags useriøse aktiviteter – inkludert farlig å fyre opp en grill med en propangasstank ved siden av kryssfiner som Gleibers lagrer mye for virksomheten deres.
«Vi ringte politiet; politiet fjernet dem, men dagen etter var de tilbake,” sukket Stuart.
Doug sa at migrantene «fester hver dag, så det er øl, matbeholdere overalt».
«Dette er vår virksomhet … Vi har folk som kommer inn gjennom inngangsdøren, [so] det er ikke en virkelig profesjonell måte å ha det på, la han til.
På torsdag var en Post-reporter vitne til at migrantmenn frekt satte fart opp og ned 10th Street på mopeder og pop-wheelies. Andre satt i flokker langs gaten og fortauet, som var strødd med tomme sigarettbokser og matbeholdere. En ung gutt så på mens han ble klippet på fortauet.
På Jamaica sa en innbygger at blokken hans har blitt et fullstendig mareritt siden et krisesenter for migranter åpnet tre dører nede på Liberty Avenue, hvor mange av de nyankomne tilbringer dagene sine ute med å drikke sprit og røyke hasj.
Noen ble kastet ut av krisesenteret, tidligere Van Wyck Hotel, for dårlig oppførsel, men returnerte senere i kjøretøy for å parkere på gaten og sove, husket videograf Craig Richardson.
«Jeg vet ikke hvor de får pengene til å kjøpe biler,» sa Richardson, 53. «Og når de må på do, hvor ble de av? I bakgården min!»
Han beskylder også migranter for å forsøple blokken med alle slags rusk og tiltrekke seg «store rotter».
«Vi får billetter til søppel fordi de kaster søppel over alt,» sa Richardson. «Hvorfor har jeg skitne babybleier foran huset mitt når jeg ikke har barn her? Jeg henter ølflasker, gressposer, bleier.»
I Midtown sa Angelica Cisneros, som jobber på en salatbar ved siden av et krisesenter for migranter på 47th Street, tidligere kjent som Econo Lodge Times Square-hotellet, at de nye beboerne – selv de betalende kundene – er dårlige for virksomheten.
«De røyker; de er rotete, og de henger rundt hver dag,” sa Cisneros, 40. “Det plager oss fordi vi må rydde bordene hele tiden – og noen av dem er frekke.”
I løpet av det siste året har Midtown vært åsted for ville sammenstøt mellom migranter og politifolk, inkludert en i mai på historiske Roosevelt Hotel og en annen i februar hvor en gjeng migranter satte i gang et grusomt angrep på to NYPD-offiserer på Times Square.
Det gjespende gapet mellom livskvalitet på Upper West Side og Upper East Side var fornuftig for mangeårige innbyggere som fortalte om data innhentet av The Post som viser store avvik i byens plassering av tilfluktsrom for migranter.
Det er åtte tilfluktsrom for migranter i postnummer på UWS, mens UES bare har ett tilfluktssted: det en gang så elegante Bentley Hotel på E. 62nd Gate.
«Det gjør folk som bor på Upper West Side frustrerte at de kan krysse blokken og gå en fem-minutters eller 10-minutters spasertur gjennom [Central] Park, og det er som å være i en annen by,» UWS-aktivist Maria Danzilo, 67,
– Potensialet for å føle seg utrygg på Vestsiden har mye mer potensial på grunn av krisesentrene. Du skal ikke føle deg trygg som om det er to byer atskilt av en park – en som føles trygg og en som ikke gjør det.»
Klager fra nabolag inkluderer migranter som ulovlig kjører mopeder, drikker og blåser rikelig med gryter i offentligheten, ulovlig kjøp av frukt og annen mat på travle veier og trakassering av uteserveringer for penger, ifølge UWS-beboere.
Likevel sa rådskvinne Gale Brewer, en demokrat som representerer UWS, at hun er godt klar over klagene, men insisterte på at den historisk liberale nabe «håndterer det ganske bra.»
Shawn Hill, medgründer av Greater Harlem Coalition, sa at han og hans naboer på Upper Manhattan er frustrerte over at byen ikke har klart å på rettferdig måte bygge tilfluktsrom for migranter.
«Akkurat som vi vil ha vår andel av sportsfasiliteter i verdensklasse, vakre sykkelstier og parker, vil vi også at andre nabolag skal ta sin del av noe av den mindre populære samfunnsinfrastrukturen,» sa Hill. «Vi har fordelt skoler, brannstasjoner rettferdig. Hvorfor kan vi ikke gjøre det med krisesentre?»
«Ingen nabolag, byrådsdistrikt, senatdistrikt, bør fungere som en inneslutningssone for byen for uønsket samfunnsinfrastruktur,» la han til.
Rådmann Keith Powers (D-Manhattan), som representerer deler av Midtown med massevis av tilfluktsrom for migranter, var enig.
«Vi erkjenner at det er en nasjonal krise som kom til New York City som krevde at vi gjorde mange ting veldig raskt, men ingen enkelt distrikt skulle bære byrden av denne krisen,» sa Powers, hvis distrikt inkluderer åtte tilfluktsrom i 10036 zip. kode i Midtown West.
Noen rådsmedlemmer som representerer nabolag med lite eller ingen tilfluktsrom, nektet å la seg intervjue, og sa at de er bekymret for å snakke om temaet vil vekke oppmerksomhet og føre til at ordfører Eric Adams åpner flere krisesentre i nabolagene deres.
Liz Garcia, en talsperson for borgermesteren, insisterte imidlertid på at Adams-administrasjonen er forpliktet til å plassere krisesentrene rettferdig.
«Med mer enn 65 300 migranter i vår omsorg, og et gjennomsnitt på over tusen flere som fortsetter å ankomme hver uke, har vi brukt alle mulige hjørner av New York City til å gi asylsøkere ly på en medfølende og rettferdig måte, men gitt naturen i denne nødsituasjonen har vi prioritert nettsteder som er praktiske, effektive og kostnadseffektive,» sa hun.
