MILWAUKEE — Slik denne nøtteaktige, opp-og-ned Mets-sesongen går, er det bare riktig at det blir ekstrautstyr.
Tjueåtte av 30 lag er ferdige med å spille ordinære sesongkamper, men Mets dro ut på en en-dagers, to-kamps tur til Atlanta for å møte sin nemesis Braves etter å ha slått sin nyeste fiende her søndag.
Mets travel er et vedvarende mareritt i år, fra ett-spill-serien i St. Louis klemt av vestkystsvingninger til orkanen i Atlanta denne uken, og det blir ikke bedre med turen tilbake til deres minst favorittby.
«Det er ikke overraskende måten denne sesongen har gått,» sa Brandon Nimmo. «Vi har definitivt hatt noen rare ting som har skjedd.»
Reiseruten stinker, siden de må fly og spille sin første sluttspillkamp på veien allerede neste dag hvis de er med.
Men dette er stillingen de ønsker seg, og akkurat det de fortjener. De trenger bare å vinne en av to for å slå billetten til oktober.
Kall dem heldige, om du vil, siden deres 5-0 seier søndag representerte deres første seier på denne turen fra helvete, som allerede så tre tap og to kamper utsatt av orkanen Helene. Men innser også at Mets kjempet tilbake fra en 0-5 start, og stående 11 kamper under 0,500 for å sette seg i denne posisjonen ved å legge inn MLBs beste rekord over 100 kamper på vei inn i strekningen.
Si hva du vil, men de fikk denne plassen. Nå trenger de bare å vinne et spill på et sted de hater, deretter fire nye runder, alle sannsynligvis med ulemper for rekord og lokalitet.
«Det kommer til å bli en tøff oppgave,» sa JD Martinez. «Vi må bare suge det opp og komme oss gjennom det.»
Med en relativt liten, men vokal Mets-kontingent å heie dem på, viste de hvorfor de er et av 13 lag som fortsatt håper å vinne hovedpremien. Den fremvoksende stjernen David Peterson satte en perle og Mets MVP Francisco Lindor satte den nødvendige tonen, og ignorerte eventuelle langvarige ryggsmerter for å involvere seg i tre løpsscorende omganger, inkludert den første da han gikk, stjal og scoret.
Uansett hvor dårlig denne turen gikk, så Mets ut og spilte avslappet i en kamp de trengte å vinne for å gi seg selv en anstendig sjanse. Ved å endelig seire her og vinne denne første seieren over de irriterende Brewers, trenger Mets bare en splittelse. Det virker veldig gjennomførbart i en sesong som har splittet personlighet.
Mets fant sin mojo i denne, og spilte en av sine beste kamper mot et av de bedre lagene. Manager Carlos Mendozas budskap var å ha det gøy, leke med et smil og vite at det er i hendene dine.
Ordene ga gjenklang. Mets spilte løst og lett, og slo et lag som er i ferd med å bli en flerårig torn.
«Vi kan ikke legge press på oss selv. Jeg har sagt det siden vi sugde og alle på en måte avskrev oss … Vi har ikke noe press. Vi skal ikke være her, sa Martinez.

«Vi kan bare ikke komme hit og legger plutselig press på oss selv,» fortsatte Martinez. – Dette laget spiller bare bedre [this] måte — vi bare har det gøy, roter med alle, hører på Iggys OMG-sang og gjør narr av ham, og alle har det bra.»
Ingen utflukt til Atlanta kan betraktes som en joyride, men sammenlignet med det de har vært gjennom, er det levelig. Det er også spent.
Braves er flotte, men de er ikke helt hva de ofte er. Fire av deres største stjerner forblir ute, og de spiller billige pickuper noen steder.
Mets-oddsene er rett og slett ikke dårlige.
«Vi har en sjanse. Vi er der, sa Mendoza. «Vi trenger en til. Så vi føler oss bra.»
Apropos å ha det bra, det gjorde også fansen som tok turen hit for å heie på heltene sine.
«Let’s Go Mets,» sang de tidlig.
Senere ble ting mer spesifikke.
«Beat the Braves», sang de.
Det er selvfølgelig aldri den enkleste oppgaven. Men ting føles positivt rundt dette Mets-teamet. De har Luis Severino og Tylor Megill i full hvile eller bedre i kø for å slå dobbelthodet som vil avgjøre deres skjebne.
Ting er oppegående i minst en dag for laget fra Queens. Det er den potensielle oktoberplanen som følger som fremstår som ganske vanskelig. Men hvem vet med denne gruppen? De er alt annet enn forutsigbare.
Hvis de feier Braves, drar de til San Diego for å møte et Padres-lag som har vært best i baseball de siste to månedene.
Hvis de splittes, drar de tilbake hit – og tar den andre tur-retur på to dager. Det har vært et vanvittig år. Hvis de tåler all denne reisen, og overlever, vil de ha fortjent det.
