MIAMI GARDENS, Florida — Atlanta-rookien Michael Penix Jr. fullførte 9 av 16 pasninger på 104 yards i Falcons’ 20-13-tap mot Miami Dolphins fredag kveld i første sesongåpning for begge lag.
Penix, den tidligere Washington-stjernen som draftet åttende totalt, startet og spilte de første fem drivene.
Han koblet sammen med mottakeren Chris Blair på en 41-yard pasning ned langs sidelinjen midtveis i det første kvarteret for hans lengste fullføring.
Penix dirigerte to kjøringer som endte med scoringer – Younghoe Koos 39-yard field goal og Carlos Washingtons 1-yard touchdown-løp.
Taylor Heinicke erstattet Penix med 6:40 igjen i andre kvartal.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa og mottaker Tyreek Hill var blant veteranene som ikke var i uniform for Miami. Tagovailoa signerte en fire års forlengelse, og Hill fikk kontrakten omstrukturert under treningsleiren.
Jason Sanders sparket feltmål på 58 og 47 yards for Dolphins, som tok ledelsen for godt med 14 strake poeng i andre kvartal.
Skylar Thompsons 6-yard touchdown-pasning til Jeff Wilson Jr. utlignet til 10. Jaylen Wright løp den deretter inn fra 6 yards etter at linebacker Isaiah Mack fikk tilbake Heinickes fomlete snap.
Sanders og Koo konverterte feltmål i tredje kvartal før Atlanta snudde to ganger på nedturer inne i Miami 10 i fjerde kvartal.
Falcons planlegger i utgangspunktet å bruke Penix som en understudy for veteranen Kirk Cousins, som signerte en fireårig avtale i offseason.
Det er ikke bestemt om Cousins vil ta bilder i løpet av preseason når han kommer seg etter en akillesskade som satte ham på sidelinjen i de siste ni kampene forrige sesong.
Cousins har deltatt på Atlantas treningsleir, inkludert de to fellestreningene med Miami på Dolphins-anlegget denne uken.
Mens Penix spilte, var ikke edge-rusher Chop Robinson, Dolphins’ førsterundevalg, i uniform.
