Et ektepar i Michigan skal ha forlatt sitt adopterte haitiske barn på en jamaicansk internatskole som ble stengt på grunn av påstander om overgrep, og etterlot ham alene i det fremmede fylket i flere måneder.
Mark og Spring Goldman sendte sin adopterte sønn Elijah (17) til amerikansk-eide Atlantis Leadership Academy i øynasjonen etter at tenåringen ble anklaget for ofte å ha oppført seg dårlig, sett på porno og stukket av, ifølge Detroit Free Press.
Internatskolen ble imidlertid tvunget til å stenge dørene i mars etter at tjenestemenn oppdaget at ansatte slo og mishandlet barna i deres omsorg.
Fem skoleansatte ble siktet for barnemishandling og overgrep, ifølge NBC News.
Da bekymrede foreldre skyndte seg å hente barna sine, kom Elijahs foreldre, som adopterte ham da han var 10, aldri, og tenåringen var strandet de siste åtte månedene.
«Jeg setter pris på at de tok meg med til USA, men de forlot meg,» sa Elijah til DFP.
«Jeg holder meg sterk, men det gjør vondt.»
Han bodde i jamaicanske gruppehjem inntil myndighetene satte ham på et fly og fløy ham til Florida 3. september, hvor adoptivforeldrene hans sendte den uidentifiserte mannen som tok ham til den jamaicanske skolen mot hans vilje for å hente ham og ta ham til Utah, rapporterte utsalgsstedet.
Elijah nektet imidlertid å gå med mannen, så Florida CPS-tjenestemenn sendte ham hjem til hjembyen hans siden han ble adoptert, Traverse City, Michigan – omtrent fire timer nord for Detroit.
Han har siden bodd på et hotellrom, og adoptivforeldrene hans har tatt fra seg alle elektroniske enheter og har hindret ham i å forlate eller gå ut.
Sammen med å ha mottatt en strøm av støtte fra Traverse City-samfunnet, fanget Elijahs sak oppmerksomheten til sosialisten Paris Hilton, som har vært en vokal tilhenger av tenåringen og en kritiker av trosbaserte internatskoler.
Den forlatte tenåringen og advokaten hans, den New York City-baserte barnerettighetsadvokaten Dawn Post, møtte Mark og Spring Goldman i en rettssal i Traverse City onsdag for å avgjøre hva som ville skje med ham.
Heldigvis for tenåringen kom en godhjertet fosterforelder frem for å ta ham inn etter å ha blitt rørt av historien hans, rapporterte utsalgsstedet. Mark og Spring Goldman protesterte ikke.
«Det er akkurat den rette tingen å gjøre,» sa kvinnen, identifisert som «Teri,» til utsalgsstedet mens hun klemte tenåringen.
