WASHINGTON – Politiet i Virginia offentliggjorde onsdag navnet og bildet av den mistenkte ettersøkte for innbrudd i et Donald Trumps presidentvalgkampkontor.
Toby Shane Kessler, 39, brøt seg inn på Ashburn-kontoret, omtrent en times kjøretur vest for DC, søndag og har ikke blitt lokalisert av myndighetene, sa Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
«Innbruddet skjedde omtrent klokken 20.11 og ble fanget opp av overvåkingsvideo inne på kontoret,» heter det i kontorets uttalelse.
«LCSOs undersøkelse viste at Mr. Kessler tvang inn en bakdør på stedet og tilbrakte en kort periode inne før han dro. Det ser ut til at han ikke har etterlatt seg noe, og det er fortsatt uklart hva, om noe, han tok med seg.»
Sheriffens avdeling sa at de «arbeider sammen med andre rettshåndhevelsesbyråer for å finne Mr. Kessler og spør [for] offentlighetens bistand.»
«Mr. Kessler har en historie med kriminell oppførsel og ser ut til å ha vært i hovedstadsområdet i Washington i det minste siden 2018. Han har et California-førerkort, sier kontoret.
Kessler står overfor en arrestordre på én siktelse for innbrudd.
Selv om motivene til den mistenkte er uklare, beskrev pressemeldingen ham som å ha «ingen fast adresse», noe som sannsynligvis betyr at han er hjemløs.
Politiske innbrudd under valg har som kjent påvirket amerikansk politikk før, og søndagshendelsen vakte umiddelbart spørsmål om motivet – og skjedde en dag etter at Trump-kampanjen sa at den var blitt hacket av Irans regjering.
I juni 1972 gjorde operatører knyttet til daværende president Richard Nixons kampanje innbrudd i et demokratisk kontor i Watergate-komplekset i DC – og utløste skandalen som tvang Nixon til å trekke seg i august 1974.
I 2016-kampanjen ble Trumps daværende demokratiske fiende Hillary Clintons kampanjestab hacket og pinlige e-poster ble sluppet, angivelig etter ordre fra den russiske regjeringen.
