En mor fra Illinois ble arrestert etter at hennes én måned gamle sønn døde av «alvorlig» hypertermi og dehydrering – etter at den nyfødte ble forlatt i en varm bil i en «forlenget periode», ifølge myndighetene.
Andrea Luncsford, 25, ble siktet for å sette et barns helse og liv i fare, etter at hennes nye baby ble funnet død mandag kveld rundt klokken 19, sa Peoria Police Department.
En obduksjon avslørte at babyen, identifisert som Grayson Luncsford, hadde blitt etterlatt i et kjøretøy i en «forlenget periode», uten mat, vann eller klimaanlegg, rapporterte WCBU.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood sa at det var vanskelig å fastslå hvor lenge nøyaktig lille Grayson var igjen i pickupen, men myndighetene fortalte KBTX at han ble liggende inne i kjøretøyet i mer enn fire timer.
Høyeste dagen for 16. september var 90 grader, med et minimum på 59 grader, ifølge Weather.com.
Babyen ble tatt ut av lastebilen og plassert i en hage av bestefaren før politiet ankom. Harwood sa at han hadde vært død «en god stund» da han ankom.
«Dette er også en død som kan forebygges,» sa Harwood ifølge WBCU.
«Når du har et spedbarn eller et barn i en bil over lengre tid i denne varmen, vil utfallet bli som det er akkurat nå i dag, det vil si at vi har døden til en 1 måned gammel gutt som har dødd fordi de satt i en bil uten klimaanlegg, ingen ventilasjon, ingen ernæring, ingen hydrering.»
Rettsmedisineren slo fast at Grayson døde som et resultat av «grov omsorgssvikt på grunn av alvorlig hypertermi og dyp dehydrering,» rapporterte Kansas City Star.
Harwood oppfordret foreldre til å huske at et spedbarns kropp ikke tåler å bli stående alene i et kjøretøy over lengre tid.
«Vi må huske … ikke engang bare et spedbarn, (men) til og med en voksen vil lide av hypertermi og dehydrering,» sa Harwood, rapporterte WCBU.
«Det kommer til å skje mye raskere for et spedbarn, dessverre, på grunn av kroppsoverflaten og sammensetningen av kroppene deres og hvor skjøre de er i spedbarnsalderen uansett.»
