Mike Tirico gjorde en feil, og rettet den raskt opp.
NBC-kunngjøreren ga en rask unnskyldning på sosiale medier etter å ha feilidentifisert Martiniques flagg som Palestinas under gullmedaljeseremonien for menns basketball i Paris.
Frankrikes Mathias Lessort, som ble født på Martinique – et fransk territorium – hadde øyas flagg drapert rundt skuldrene mens han tok imot sølv etter å ha tapt finalen til Team USA.
«Du så med Lessort, et av backup-sentrene, Palestina-flagget drapert over skuldrene hans,» sa Tirico på NBC. «Vi er absolutt bevisste på alle visninger angående Midtøsten-konflikten fra idrettsutøvere involvert i disse spillene.»
Mens de to flaggene har lignende hvite, grønne og svarte fargeskjemaer, blandet Tirico dem sammen – og gitt den åpenbare følsomheten som spiller over Midtøsten, ba han om unnskyldning bare minutter senere.
«Bare erkjenner, så snart som mulig, feilen min for feilidentifikasjon av Martinique-flagget som flagget til Palestina under medaljeseremonien for menns basketball i dag,» skrev Tirico på X. «De er like, men åpenbart tydelig forskjellige, noe som er ganske viktig for alle involvert.
«Jeg beklager feilen og vil korrigere på lufta under vårt primetime show i kveld.»
Den raske unnskyldningen så ut til å rette opp det som kunne ha blitt en rotete situasjon, ettersom det meste av svaret på Tiricos unnskyldning var å rose ham for å eie feilen i motsetning til å kritisere selve feilen.
