Medlemmer av media og NFL-miljøet ser ut til å være delt over spillerforbundets nye policyanbefaling som vil begrense journalister fra å gjennomføre spillerintervjuer i garderobene i løpet av uken.
Cincinnati Bengals senter Ted Karras, som fungerer som NFLPA-spillerrepresentant, bekreftet nylig det nye programmet som vil oppmuntre spillere til å gjennomføre intervjuer utenfor garderoben.
Han sa torsdag at mens ideen bak endringen først ble diskutert etter COVID-pandemien, førte nylige hendelser der spillere ble fanget «nakne på kamera» til den umiddelbare oppfordringen til handling.
«Jeg tror det som brakte det frem i lyset var et par gutter nakne på kamera i år. Jeg vet at det har skjedd noen ganger gjennom ligaens historie. Men dette vil ikke påvirke spilledagen, tror jeg ikke. Vi skal komme opp med en god løsning for å gjøre uken så smidig som mulig, gi alle den tiden de trenger og igjen beskytte garderobens hellighet, sa Karras.
NFLPA ga fredag ut en uttalelse der de ber ligaen endre sin «utdaterte» mediepolitikk til en som fremmer «en mer respektfull og tryggere arbeidsplass».
«I løpet av de siste tre årene har NFLPA prøvd å samarbeide med NFL og Pro Football Writers of America for å flytte medieintervjuer ut av garderobene. Det har imidlertid vært liten vilje til å samarbeide om en ny løsning, heter det i uttalelsen.
«Spillere føler at garderobeintervjuer invaderer privatlivet deres og er ubehagelige. Dette handler ikke om å begrense medietilgang, men om å respektere spillernes privatliv og verdighet.
«NFLs nåværende mediepolitikk er utdatert. Vi, NFLPA Executive Committee, oppfordrer NFL til å gjøre umiddelbare endringer for å fremme en mer respektfull og tryggere arbeidsplass for alle spillere. I mellomtiden oppfordrer vi hver spiller til å be om intervjuer utenfor garderoben i løpet av uken.»
Endringen forventes ikke å endre spilldagens operasjoner, men medlemmer av media og NFL-fellesskapet så ut til å være delt i saken.
Programmet er rettet mot å stoppe garderobeintervjuer i løpet av uken, men ikke på spilledagen.
Karras sa at mens spillere står fritt til å gjøre hva de vil, ba han medlemmer av media «respektere» den nye prosessen med å intervjue spillere.
