En kanadisk manns interesse for offentlig transport fikk ham til å reise fra hjemmet til Mexico med én hake: han nektet å ta noen Greyhound-busser eller Amtrak-tog under reisen.
William Hui, 40, la ut på tur til Stillehavskysten 24. juni, med start i hjembyen hans i British Columbia, rapporterte BBC.
Han hadde som mål å nå Tijuana, Mexico på ni dager ved å ta bare offentlige busser og tog og holde gange mellom stopp på et minimum.
«Jeg måtte ikke på noe tidspunkt i denne turen gå mer enn kanskje 15 minutter fra en bussholdeplass til en annen,» sa Hui til BBC fredag.
TransLink-systemingeniøren – transportmyndigheten i Vancouver – fortalte utsalgsstedet at ideen dukket opp i hodet hans da han oppdaget en firetimers bussrute som forbinder Eureka, en by nord i California, til Ukiah, omtrent to timer nord for San Francisco.
Hui sa at han i 2013 hadde prøvd å reise så langt sør for Vancouver som mulig, men endte opp med å stoppe reisen i Salem, Oregon.
Han fortalte utsalgsstedet når han nådde landlige områder i Pacific Northwest-staten, var det «ingen transitt stort sett som krysset Oregon til sentrale California.»
Men da han oppdaget de nye bussrutene, sa Hui at de var «den manglende lenken» for å vinne terreng og kartla hvordan han ville ta fatt på sin kollektivreise til Mexico.
Etter å ha gått ut på turen, la Hui merke til en ting som har endret seg siden han sist forsøkte forsøket i 2013.
Kollektivbussene han tok var nå utstyrt med WiFi og aksepterte kreditt- eller debetkortbetalinger for tjenestene deres.
En annen ting han la merke til var forskjellen mellom kollektivtransport i større byer.
«Det var bare bemerkelsesverdig å se hvordan de forskjellige tjenestene hang sammen, spesielt i landlige områder,» sa Hui til utsalgsstedet.
I byer som Seattle eller San Francisco stoppet busser regelmessig og reiste ikke så langt som de han fant i mer landlige områder, hvor en buss kjørte flere timer og krysset hundrevis av mil før de nådde sin endelige destinasjon, ifølge uttak.
På spørsmål om hva han gjorde for å få tiden til å gå, sa Hui at han likte å stirre ut av vinduet, ta inn kystlandskapet og observere atmosfæren i de nye byene og byene han var på vei gjennom.
«Jeg liker veldig godt å se naturen når vi går forbi. Jeg elsker å se på hvordan byene er lagt opp, sa han til The Vancouver Sun.
«Da vi passerte kysten eller skogen, var det bare en glede for meg å se alt det landskapet.»
Hui kunne heller ikke la være å stirre over de enorme gårdene i det sørlige California.
«Jeg har sett dem fra luften før, men størrelsen og vidden av feltene er forskjellige når du reiser langs staten,» sa han.
Under reisen sa Hui at han krysset alle internasjonale grenser til fots siden offentlig transport ikke var tilgjengelig.
Han delte at mens de var ved grensen mellom USA og Canada, var grenseagenter skeptiske til grunnene hans for å reise inn i USA.
«Det er ikke så mange mennesker som krysser den (nordlige) grensen til fots,» sa Hui til BBC.
Heldigvis lot de ham fortsette reisen etter at han forklarte seg.
Men når han nådde den sørlige grensen mellom USA og Mexico, la Hui merke til mer fottrafikk og kom seg gjennom uten problemer.
Når han ser tilbake på turen, sa han at en ting han la mest merke til var hvor viktig offentlig transport var til områdene han gikk gjennom.
«En ting som slo meg på denne turen er hvor viktig transitt er for lokalsamfunnene den betjener,» sa Hui til utsalgsstedet.
«Jeg var ikke på noe tidspunkt alene på bussen i lengre perioder.»
Til slutt delte Hui at den «fantastiske delen» av turen hans var hvor effektiv offentlig transport var under reisen.
Han bemerket at selv når han ble sittende fast i langvarig Los Angeles-trafikk, hadde han nok tid til å opprette sin neste forbindelse og trengte ikke å ty til noen reserveplaner.
Systemingeniøren brukte rundt 200 dollar på bussbilletter og sa at turen var verdt hver krone.
Huis råd til andre som kanskje tenker på å legge ut på en lignende reise som ham er enkelt.
«Vet når bussen kommer.»
