Patrick Ewing er tilbake der han hører hjemme.
Tjuefire år etter at han forlot Knicks i en skjebnesvanger handel til Seattle, ble Hall of Fame-senteret ansatt som en «basketballambassadør som bistår både basketball og forretningsdrift,» kunngjorde teamet torsdag.
«Som jeg sa den dagen min nummer 33 løftet seg i takbjelkene på MSG, vil jeg alltid være en Knick og jeg vil alltid være en New Yorker,» sa Ewing i en uttalelse. «Jeg gleder meg til å komme i gang i denne nye stillingen og offisielt være tilbake med organisasjonen jeg elsker så mye.»
Etter å ha trukket seg tilbake fra å spille, tilbrakte Ewing flere år som assistenttrener med Wizards, Rockets, Magic og Hornets.
Nylig var han hovedtrener i Georgetown før han fikk sparken etter seks sesonger.
Men siden han trakk seg fra å spille, har Ewing aldri trent Knicks eller hatt en stilling i organisasjonen før torsdag.
Det var rapporter om at Ewing en gang ble tilbudt D-League-trenerstillingen, som han avviste fordi CV-en hans antydet at det var fornærmende.
Ewing, 62, har nære bånd til nåværende Knicks og ble sett på MSG som gjest flere ganger forrige sesong.
Han ble coachet av Tom Thibodeau, som var en Knicks-assistent på slutten av 90-tallet, og var lagkamerater med Rick Brunson, en nåværende Knicks-assistent og far til stjernepekeren Jalen.
«New York Knicks og Patrick Ewing er synonyme med hverandre, og vi er ydmyke og glade for å bringe Patrick hjem igjen,» sa Knicks-president Leon Rose i en uttalelse. «Patrick er en monumental skikkelse i New Yorks basketballhistorie, og bringer med seg et vell av kunnskap fra sin tid både på og utenfor banen som er uten sidestykke. Vi er i ekstase over at Patrick igjen vil være tilbake i det blå og oransje.»
