MILWAUKEE — En viss isbjørns retur fra dvalemodus sto høyt på Mets ønskeliste da de vurderte oppgaven foran dem torsdag kveld.
Pete Alonsos brøl har vært dempet i flere uker, og hvis Mets skulle forlenge sesongen med en Game 3-seier over Brewers i NL Wild Card Series, ville det hjelpe å ha deres sløve første baseman involvert.
Alonso gikk inn i spillet uten en homer siden 19. september, da han gikk dypt mot Phillies.
Den eksplosjonen var også det siste ekstra-basetreffet for Alonso, som var 1-for-5 (0,200) i wildcard-serien da spillet begynte.
Han gikk tre ganger i Game 1 Mets-seieren.
«Jeg føler at jeg tar ganske anstendige kamper, og jeg føler meg veldig konsekvent,» sa Alonso. «Jeg må bare fortsette å svinge, og gode ting vil skje.»
Alonso, som er på vei til fritt spillerom etter World Series, spilte muligens sin siste kamp i Mets-drakt torsdag.
Det er en tanke han sier ikke hadde kommet inn i hodet før han ble spurt om det.
«Jeg vil egentlig ikke tenke på det i det hele tatt,» sa Alonso. «Hele fokuset mitt går dypt inn i sluttspillet.»
Alonso kommer ikke til å treffe markedet i oppgangen: Han produserte en solid, men uspektakulær .240/.329/.459 skråstrek med 34 homer og 88 RBI i løpet av den ordinære sesongen.
Hjemmeløpet var det laveste i karrieren på en hel sesong.
Manager Carlos Mendoza ble før torsdagens kamp spurt om han følte Alonso har lagt for mye press på seg selv.
«Jeg ser ikke det, og jeg føler det ikke,» sa Mendoza. «Han er den samme fyren. Ja, det har vært vanskelig for ham hele året, og det har definitivt vært vanskelig for ham de siste to-tre ukene, men jeg liker måten han kontrollerer streiksonen på.
«Han er en sving unna, men jeg ser ikke at han prøver å gjøre for mye eller får panikk eller legger for mye press på seg selv, det ser jeg ikke. Jeg ser den samme fyren som holder den løs.»
Mets mottok sene homers fra Brandon Nimmo og Francisco Lindor i forbikjøringen av Braves på mandag i den første kampen av en dobbel header for å få en jokerplass.
Mets gjorde ikke homer på kveldsdrinken eller i de to første kampene i serien mot Brewers.
Den mangelen på pop understreket bare Alonsos siste kamp.
«Det føles ikke som om han har mistet selvtilliten,» sa Lindor. «Det ser ut som han jobber og jobber for å bli bedre. Jeg tror han føler at han hadde et godt år.
Lindor ble spurt om han trodde Alonsos truende frie handlefrihet hadde tynget ham.
«Jeg har ikke sett det i det hele tatt,» sa Lindor.
Forskjellen for Mets mellom en produktiv Pete Alonso og ikke-produktiv er gapet som eksisterer mellom en isbjørn og en unge.
«Han er en fyr som kan bære et lag,» sa Mendoza.
Det var fortsatt tid for Alonso da Mets avsluttet slagtreningen på American Family Field og trakk seg tilbake til klubbhuset for siste kamp 3-forberedelser.
Hvis Mets var så heldige å avansere til NLDS mot Phillies, ventet to kamper i startrampen kjent som Citizens Bank Park, og muligheten for at Alonso ville ha et vennlig miljø.
«Homers kommer til å skje,» sa Alonso. «Jeg tror at hvis vi bare fortsetter kollektivt som en gruppe å slå ballen hardt når de kommer over midten av retten, vil homerne skje.»
