Sony Music er i avanserte samtaler om å kjøpe rettighetene til Pink Floyds musikkkatalog for 500 millioner dollar – selv om den blir stoppet av forskjeller mellom noen av bandmedlemmene, ifølge en rapport.
Det har vært vanskelig å få til en avtale fordi noen av bandmedlemmene – spesielt bassist og sanger Roger Waters og gitarist og sanger David Gilmour – har personlige forskjeller, sa anonyme kilder til Financial Times.
Kataloganskaffelsen er klar til å bli en av de mest lukrative avtalene i bransjen. Flere bud – fra grupper inkludert Hipgnosis, Warner Music og BMG – for bandets musikkrettigheter har falt gjennom gjennom årene.
Men Pink Floyd går nå videre med samtaler med Sony Music for å selge katalogen – som inkluderer hits som «Money», «Wish You Were Here» og «Another Brick in the Wall», sa kilder til FT.
Det er imidlertid ingen garanti for at salget vil skje, siden det har vært problemer tidligere med å prøve å låse en avtale, sa en kilde til FT.
Men flyttingen viser at det fortsatt er interesse blant industrien for å kjøpe rettighetene til eldre artisters musikkkataloger – selv om høyere renter har gitt avkastning på rettighetserverv.
I juli investerte private equity-konsernet Apollo 700 millioner dollar i Sony for å hjelpe til med å finansiere musikkoppkjøp.
Etablerte artisters musikk kan leve lenger, ettersom yngre fans blir introdusert for musikken deres i TV-serier og filmer gjennom strømmetjenester, noe som kan forklare hvorfor katalogavtaler har fortsatt.
Sony Music er også i forhandlinger om å kjøpe rettighetene til Queens musikk for rundt 1 milliard dollar.
Selskapet kjøpte tidligere Bruce Springsteens katalog med støtte fra Eldridge Industries, grunnlagt av investor Todd Boehly.
Universal Music kjøpte hele Bob Dylans låtskriverkatalog i 2020. Prisen ble ikke offentliggjort, men den ble anslått til rundt 300 millioner dollar.
Hipgnosis kjøpte Neil Youngs katalogrettigheter i 2021, som angivelig kostet rundt 150 millioner dollar.
Waters og Gilmour ledet hver sin solokarriere etter at gruppen ble oppløst.
Det psykedeliske rockebandet ble dannet på 1960-tallet og revolusjonerte rockekonserter med bruk av holografiske projeksjoner og andre visuelle og lydeffekter.
Tre av bandets album er blant de mest solgte gjennom tidene.
