Politiet i Texas raidet et ledig leilighetskompleks i San Antonio som hadde falt under «kontroll» av den beryktede Tren de Aragua-gjengen, som brukte bygningen som base for kriminalitet, sa tjenestemenn.
En arbeidsgruppe med flere byråer ryddet mer enn 300 ledige enheter ved Palatia Apartments på nordsiden av byen lørdag morgen, sa politisjef i San Antonio McManus til journalister på en pressekonferanse.
SAPD hadde mottatt flere klager fra leilighetskomplekset angående narkotika, menneskesmugling og trusler mot leilighetspersonell, ifølge politiet.
«Vi hadde informasjon om at medlemmer av den transnasjonale gjengen Tren de Agua hadde kontroll over området og begikk forskjellige forbrytelser,» sa McManus.
Tjue personer ble arrestert, fire som er bekreftet Tren de Agua-medlemmer – inkludert en person som er en «enforcer», sa han.
Nitten av de pågrepne ble siktet. Flere av de arresterte hadde bekreftede ordrer, sa tjenestemenn.
Leilighetene ble gjennomsøkt av et felles team av offiserer fra SAPD, Texas Department of Public Safety, Federal Bureau of Investigation og US Customs and Border Protection, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and Homeland Security Investigations.
Arrestasjonene kommer etter en ukes lang etterforskning som en del av SAPDs «Operation Aurora»-initiativ, som er en del av en bredere innsats for å forstyrre Tren de Araguas innflytelse i Texas.
Myndighetene mener Tren de Aragua i San Antonio er involvert i prostitusjon, salg av kokain og andre voldelige forbrytelser, ifølge News4SA.
McManus sa lørdag at gjengen har operert i området i «flere måneder»
Han sa at de har identifiserende tatoveringer og er kjent for å ha rødt.
«Vi forsikrer samfunnet og medlemmer av publikum om at vi er forpliktet til deres sikkerhet og på toppen av dette TDA-problemet som ser ut til å ha blitt veldig offentlig i det siste,» sa McManus.
Lørdagens byste var politiets første fjerning av et kjent gjengsted, men sjefen sa «Vi har andre steder vi skal treffe.»
«Vi er på dere,» sa han til gjengmedlemmene. «Vi kommer etter deg og vi vet hvor du er.»
Mer enn 100 mistenkte medlemmer av Tren de Aragua (TdA) var en del av gruppen som stormet grensen ved El Paso, Texas i mars.
Siden den gang har gjengen skapt fotfeste over hele landet, angivelig overtatt leiligheter i Colorado, beslaglagt hoteller nær Texas-grensen i El Paso og skutt politi i New York.
Tren de Agua er kjent nasjonalt for å lokke kvinner inn i sexhandel, og tvinge dem til å selge kroppene sine i amerikanske byer for å betale ned ublu smuglergebyrer, ifølge et lekket notat fra politimyndighetene mottatt av The Post forrige måned.
I Big Apple prøver Tren de Aragua å rekruttere fotsoldater for å tvinge kvinner til sexhandel for å finansiere gjengaktivitet.
Texas-guvernør Greg Abbott har erklært fengselsgjengen som en utenlandsk terrororganisasjon.
