En frisk rugbykaptein har fått fjernet halvparten av tarmen etter å ha blitt diagnostisert med kreft mens han var i trettiårene.
Andrew Walker, 31, ble fortalt at han hadde tarmkreft etter at han gikk til fastlegen fordi han begynte å føle seg ganske sliten.
Han fikk deretter fjernet halvparten av tarmen og lymfeknutene og venter for øyeblikket på testresultater som vil avgjøre om han trenger mer behandling.
Rundt 94 % av personer som får diagnosen tarmkreft er over 50 år, så Andrew ble sjokkert da han ble fortalt at han hadde sykdommen.
Andrew, som spiller for Bradford Dudley Hill RLFC i West Yorks., sa: «Det er ikke vanlig at noen i trettiårene har tarmkreft.
«Jeg spurte faktisk spesialisten om jeg kunne gå og så komme tilbake, fordi jeg bare ikke kunne behandle det.»
«Jeg forventet å gå på skanning, få tatt noen prøver og reise hjem – jeg hadde ikke forventet at det skulle bli en virvelvind.»
Andrew begynte å føle seg sliten tidligere i år, men legene trodde han hadde anemi, der kroppen din ikke har nok røde blodceller til å frakte oksygen til vevet ditt.
Han brakk også ribbeinet og punkterte lungen mens han spilte rugby og brakk øyehulen mens han spilte sporten – men han trodde det var «tilfeldige skader».
Legene ba deretter sivilingeniøren om å ta en avføringsprøve, der de oppdaget at han hadde blod i avføringen og trengte ytterligere tester.
Andrew skar seg deretter i fingeren og den ble infisert, noe som medførte at han måtte tilbringe 11 netter på sykehus og ha fire operasjoner da legene ikke kunne bli kvitt det.
Selv om de «tilfeldige skadene» ikke var knyttet til tarmkreften hans, sier han at kroppen hans «ikke kunne takle noen påvirkning» fordi den kjempet mot sykdommen.
Andrew, fra Bradford, West Yorks., sa: «Jeg legger alt ned til å ha en travel livsstil og være sliten.
«Jeg satte det også ned til å være litt eldre.»
«Skadene var ikke knyttet til kreften.»
«Men kroppen min kunne ikke takle noen påvirkning, den kjempet mot kreften så den tålte ikke noe annet.»
Andrew er kaptein for Bradford Dudley Hill RLFC og sier at en av «de vanskeligste samtalene» han har hatt var å fortelle lagkameratene.
Han sa: «Det er en av de vanskeligste samtalene jeg noen gang har hatt.»
«Jeg er kapteinen deres og jeg fortalte dem at jeg ikke kunne spille og de spurte hvorfor.»
«Jeg har kjent noen av guttene i årevis, og de var alle så sjokkerte og fortvilet over det.»
«Det påvirket dem mye som hvordan det påvirket familien min, vi er et så tett sammensveiset team og er som en familie.»
Andrew, som har to sønner med sin kone Becki, 42, oppfordrer folk som har symptomer til å bli sjekket ut så tidlig som mulig.
Han sa: «Jeg vil si gå og bli sjekket, hvis du er usikker, tar en blodprøve et minutt, og det kan oppdage tidlige tegn.»
«Det er ikke bare påvirkningen det vil ha på deg, det er også påvirkningen på familien din og vennene dine.»
«Hvis de får kreft tidlig, så kan det behandles.»
«Selv om jeg får det helt klart, så er det ikke slutten på det fordi du har minimum fem år med tester.»
«Det er bra fordi de holder et øye med deg, men det tar det ut av deg.
«Det er en lengre varig påvirkning.»
