En glamorøs russisk influencer kjent som «Queen of Crypto» svindlet intetanende investorer for over 22 millioner dollar som hun deretter sendte til ukrainske tropper midt i den pågående krigen, ifølge rapporter.
Russiske myndigheter sier at Valeria Fedyakina, 24, fremstilte seg selv som en kryptovalutaekspert på sosiale medier for å få tilliten til minst fire ofre som hun senere stjal millioner fra, rapporterte NewsX.
Influenseren, som gikk forbi «Bitmama» på sosiale medier, utga seg for å være en kryptovalutaekspert med kontorer i Moskva City, Dubai, Monaco, Serbia og Tyrkia og overbeviste ofrene hennes om å stole på henne med sine millioner, rapporterte CryptoNews også.
Ofrene hennes rapporterte å ha tapt enorme summer, inkludert en som sa at han tapte 70 millioner dollar.
Etter å ha fullført etterforskningen, sa politiet at Fedyakina klarte å stjele rundt 22 millioner dollar på bare to måneder.
Politiet sier Fedyakina utførte svindelen ved å overbevise investorer om å overføre pengene sine til Dubai-krypto for å unngå bankrestriksjoner.
Ofrene sa at hun da lovet dem en bonus på 1 % på pengene de sendte henne etter at de hadde blitt konvertert til krypto.
Pengene forsvant imidlertid raskt da Fedyakina ledet dem inn i Ukrainas væpnede styrker for å hjelpe i kampen mot Russlands invasjon.
Fedyakina ble arrestert i september 2023 mens hun prøvde å forlate Russland på et fly til De forente arabiske emirater og satt i varetekt.
Hun forventes å bli formelt siktet neste måned og risikerer opptil 10 års fengsel hvis hun blir dømt, heter det i rapportene.
På det tidspunktet var hun gravid i sjette måned, men retten nektet å gi henne en mildere straff med husarrest. Hun ble tvunget til å returnere til forvaring etter å ha født på et spesielt fødesykehus.
Fedyakinas forsvar benektet påstandene om svindel og fortalte russiske medier at hun støtter landets invasjon og er klar til å donere midler for å støtte Moskvas militære.
Advokatene hennes hevdet også at hun var offer for en konspirasjon og hadde brukt sine egne midler til å betale klientene som, sier hun, aldri betalte henne tilbake.
