Ryan Murphy angrer ikke på sin siste Netflix-serie.
«Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story» har møtt kritikk for å ha antydet et incestuøst forhold mellom de beryktede brødrene som gikk i fengsel for drapet på foreldrene deres, Jose og Kitty Menendez i 1989.
Erik, 53, uttalte seg i en uttalelse og sa at det «uærlige» showet er fylt med «forferdelige og åpenbare løgner» om seg selv og broren Lyle, 56.
Murphy, 58, svarte på Eriks kritikk på mandag ved premieren av hans nye FX-serie, «Grotesquerie».
«Jeg synes det er interessant at han har gitt en uttalelse uten å ha sett showet,» sa Murphy i et intervju med Entertainment Tonight.
«Det er veldig, veldig vanskelig – hvis det er livet ditt – å se livet ditt på skjermen,» la han til.
Den berømte TV-produsenten fortsatte: «Det jeg synes er interessant som han ikke nevner i sitatet sitt, er at hvis du ser programmet, vil jeg si 60 til 65 prosent av showet vårt i manus og i filmformsenteret rundt overgrepet og det de hevder skjedde med dem. Og vi gjør det veldig nøye og vi gir dem dagen deres i retten og de snakker åpent om det.»
Murphy forklarte at det å utforske seksuelle overgrep på TV «kan være kontroversielt,» og la til: «Det er en ‘Rashomon’-tilnærming, der det var 4 personer involvert i det. To av dem er døde. Hva med foreldrene? Vi hadde en forpliktelse som historiefortellere til også å prøve å sette inn deres perspektiv basert på forskningen vår, noe vi gjorde.»
På spørsmål om det «romantiske forholdet» mellom brødrene som er fremstilt i showet, sa Murphy at han bare ønsket at historien skulle fortelles fra alle perspektiver.
«Hvis du ser på showet, det showet gjør er å presentere synspunkter og teorier fra så mange mennesker som var involvert i saken,» sa han.
«Dominick Dunne [Vanity Fair journalist] skrev flere artikler som snakket om den teorien,» bemerket Murphy. «Vi presenterer hans synspunkt. Og vi hadde en forpliktelse til å vise alt dette, og det gjorde vi.»
«Monsters» tar seerne gjennom hendelsene som førte til det oppsiktsvekkende drapet på Menendez-foreldrene i hendene på deres to sønner, som insisterte på at faren deres misbrukte dem seksuelt – sammen med kjølvannet av den brutale forbrytelsen.
Det er flere eksempler på incest-antydninger mellom brødrene i showet, en teori som angivelig fløt på den tiden av Dunne.
Erik, som soner livstid i fengsel sammen med sin bror, ga ut en uttalelse om «Monsters» på Lyles Facebook-side 20. september.
«Det er med tungt hjerte jeg sier at jeg tror Ryan Murphy ikke kan være så naiv og unøyaktig når det gjelder fakta i livene våre for å gjøre dette uten dårlige hensikter,» skrev han.
Erik sprengte Murphy og sa at han «former sin forferdelige fortelling gjennom sjofele og forferdelige karakterskildringer av Lyle og meg og nedslående baktalelse».
«Er ikke sannheten nok? La sannheten stå som sannheten, la Erik til. «Hvor demoraliserende er det å vite at en mann med makt kan undergrave flere tiår med fremgang i å kaste lys over barndomstraumer.»
Erik og Lyles første rettssak endte i to uthengte juryer i 1994. Innrømmelse av bevis angående søsknens påståtte seksuelle overgrep ble dømt som utillatelig under deres andre rettssak.
Brødrene ble dømt for drap i sin andre rettssak og ble dømt til livstid i fengsel uten mulighet for prøveløslatelse i 1996.
Cooper Koch og Nicholas Alexander Chavez spiller henholdsvis Erik og Lyle i showet. Javier Bardem og Chloe Sevigny spiller også hovedrollene som Menendez-foreldrene.
