En seriemorder dømt for drapene på 12 kvinner har tilstått drapet på en 19 år gammel mor i Sør-California i 1986.
Cathy Small, 19, ble funnet knivstukket i hjel på en gate i South Pasadena i februar 1986, men saken hennes forble uløst i nesten fire tiår.
«Vi tror vi bringer en følelse av forlenget rettferdighet og avslutning til offeret og hennes familie,» sa Sheriff Robert Luna i Los Angeles County på en pressekonferanse denne uken.
William Lester Suff, kjent som «Lake Elsinore Killer» og «Riverside Prostitute Killer» innrømmet i 2022 å ha myrdet Small etter at hans DNA ble funnet på klærne hennes, og sa at hun «raset» ham ved å slå brillene hans av ansiktet hans under en kamp. , sa Lt. Patricia Thomas under tirsdagens orientering.
Suff fortalte etterforskerne at Small først hadde møtt ham på et dataverksted hvor han jobbet og gikk med på å kjøre med ham fra Lake Elsinore i Sør-Pasadena for 50 dollar.
Etter at han knivstukket henne gjentatte ganger i passasjersetet i bilen sin, innrømmet han å ha kastet kroppen hennes på fortauet og kjørt bort, sa Thomas.
Suff, som sitter på dødscelle i San Quentin i California, innrømmet også andre uløste drap i Riverside County, sa Thomas, men identifiserte ikke ofrene.
Etterforskere innså at DNA samlet fra forbrytelsen ikke hadde blitt testet, og da det var, ble Suffs DNA funnet på klærne hennes.
Suff begynte å drepe på 1970-tallet og ble dømt for døden til sin to måneder gamle datter i Texas i 1974 og dømt til 70 år, men han ble prøveløslatt i 1984 og flyttet tilbake til California.
Luna sa at Suffs tilståelse understreker «kraften til moderne rettsmedisinsk vitenskap; to, det fantastiske, ubarmhjertige arbeidet til våre etterforskere ved drapsbyrået i Los Angeles, som jeg fortsetter å si er de beste i landet på det de gjør; og deretter samarbeidet og partnerskapet mellom etater.
«Blant alt annet vi snakker om i dag, må du alltid huske når vi snakker om noe så viktig som dette, vi snakker om et offer som mistet livet og familien som aldri vil glemme det. Og jeg vet at vi aldri glemmer det, og det er det som gjør teamarbeidet her så fantastisk.»
Thomas leste også et brev skrevet av Smalls yngre søster, som var 10 år da hun ble drept, men som ikke kunne være på pressekonferansen fordi hun bor utenfor staten.
«Søsteren min Cathy Small var ikke en statistikk,» skrev hun. «Hun var en beskyttende storesøster, en kjærlig mor og en god datter. Cathy var morsom, smart og omsorgsfull. Hun hadde et stort hjerte og ville gjøre alt for hvem som helst.»
Smalls søster sa at 19-åringen lærte henne å svømme, sykle og spille kort.
«Når jeg bodde hos storesøsteren min, tok hun meg med til kirken,» fortsatte hun. «Cathy var talentfull, men livet hennes ble forkortet før hun i det hele tatt kunne begynne å gjøre sine egne drømmer til virkelighet.»
Hun la til at Small, som jobbet som sexarbeider på tidspunktet for drapet hennes, prøvde å bli edru og hadde sluttet å bruke narkotika, «men før hun rakk å ta et nytt skritt fremover var livet hennes avsluttet.»
