Subway har innkalt til et hastemøte med franchisetakere av sine 19 000 nordamerikanske smørbrødbutikker mens de sliter med vaklende salg og fortjeneste, har The Post fått vite.
Hurtigmatgiganten – som solgte seg selv i april for 9 milliarder dollar til Roark Capital, eier av Dunkin, Arby’s og Cheesecake Factory – fortalte franchisetakerne at de vil avsløre planer om å forbedre trafikken og vinne tilbake markedsandeler på torsdagsmøtet.
«Denne konferansen er viktig,» sa Subway i invitasjonen. «Bli med oss … for å diskutere tilstanden til bransjen og en oppdatering om virksomheten vår.»
Confab – som en franchisetaker kalte et «nødmøte», og la merke til at invitasjonen først ble sendt ut forrige uke – vil inneholde en oppsummering av kampanjetilbud som for tiden testes på restauranter.
«Det er ingen virtuell nødkonferanse,» sa en talsperson for Subway, og bestridte karakteriseringen av «nødsituasjonen» av torsdagsmøtet. «Vi kommuniserer konsekvent og proaktivt med våre franchisetakere for å dele forretningsoppdateringer og planer.»
Rabatt har blitt et omstridt tema i det siste. En Subway-franchisetaker med nesten 20 butikker fortalte The Post at salget i samme butikk har gått ned 5 % til 10 % de siste ukene sammenlignet med året før.
Han legger skylden på kjedens siste priskampanjer ettersom kundetrafikken har falt.
«De lager vanvittige kuponger,» grep franchisetakeren. «Bruttosalget vårt er ikke engang på 2012-nivå, og fortjenesten den gang var fem ganger hva den er i dag.»
Franchisetakeren la til at butikkene hans knapt bryter med rabattene. I en nylig nasjonal annonsekampanje har Charles Barkley i NBA oppfordret kundene til å «kjøpe hvilken som helst fot lang i appen og få en gratis».
«Lader $6,99 for enhver sub mens de er $11 på menyen,» beklaget franchisetakeren. “Tilbyr tre smørbrød for $17,99.”
Subway gir ikke sine franchisetakere nasjonal salgsinformasjon, men en region i det østlige USA med rundt 1000 Subways så gjennomsnittlig ukentlig salg av samme butikker med 8,7 % mellom 25. juni og 16. juli sammenlignet med et år tidligere, ifølge data delt med The Post.
Subways møte «virker veldig uvanlig,» sa restaurantkonsulent John Gordon, som bemerket at han nylig har sett Subway-salgstall i vestkyst- og østkystregioner som viser salg i samme butikk på 10 % de siste ukene.
Los Angeles og San Diego samme butikksalg er ned 8 % for uken som slutter 6. august, sa en Subway-kilde. I forstedene i Sør-California er de redusert med 2% til 5%, la kilden til.
Det er i forhold til i fjor, da Subway skrøt av at salget i samme butikk i Nord-Amerika økte med 5,9 % i hele kjeden.
Subway rabatterer sine bestselgende varer, så det er vanskelig for den å kompensere for tapte inntekter, sa kilder. Håpet var at de nye $3 fot lange hot dipper snacks introdusert i juni ville øke salget, men de selger ikke nok av dem, sa kilder.
Subway i fjor hadde større suksess med å tilby Sidekicks: fotlange cookies, pretzels og churros, som bidro til positive salg i samme butikk til tross for et trafikkfall på 1,7 %. Men summingen rundt det snacktilbudet har dødd av, ifølge Gordon.
Subway, som ikke eier noen av restaurantene sine og tjener pengene sine gjennom 8 % royaltyavgifter den samler inn fra franchisetakere, står nå overfor rentebetalinger på gjeld etter salget til Roark og har ikke råd til å ha synkende inntekter, sa kilder.
Andre kjeder tilbyr i økende grad rabatter for å lokke kunder med økonomisk vanskelighet. White Castle kuttet prisen på sine berømte glidere til det laveste nivået på mer enn et tiår, som The Post rapporterte denne måneden.
Likevel, fastfood-restauranter unntatt pizzarestauranter i juli så salget i samme butikk ned 2,9 % sammenlignet med negative 1,9 % i juni, ifølge Bank of America kreditt- og debetkortnumre.
Taco Bell var opp 5 %, mens Wendy’s og Burger King i andre kvartal var flate, ifølge dataselskapet Technomic. McDonald’s utvider måltidet til en verdi av $5 til oktober.
The Golden Arches rapporterte forrige måned at samme butikksalg i andre kvartal var negativt for første gang på fire år var negativt, og falt 0,7 %.
«Dette viser at rabattkrigene ikke fungerer totalt, men de forbedrer trafikken litt,» sa Gordon.
