Terry Francona har blitt ansatt for å styre Cincinnati Reds, og returnerte til de store ligaene et år etter at han trakk seg i Cleveland på grunn av helsemessige årsaker.
En person som er kjent med situasjonen bekreftet utspillet torsdag kveld på betingelse av anonymitet fordi de røde ikke hadde kunngjort avgjørelsen.
Francona erstatter David Bell, som fikk sparken av Cincinnati i de siste dagene av sin sjette sesong.
Bell hadde en rekord på 409-456 med de røde.
Francona, som fyller 66 år i april, spilte for Cincinnati i 1987. Han slo .227 med tre homers og 12 RBI på 102 kamper.
Han hadde holdt en lav profil siden han forlot Guardians.
Han kom tilbake til Cleveland i løpet av sommeren for å hjelpe til med å lansere en ny restaurant der han har en eierandel.
Francona har lenge vært en av baseballens mest elskede skikkelser, og har en rekord på 1.950-1.672 på 23 år som storligasjef med Philadelphia (1997-2000), Red Sox (2004-2011) og Guardians (2013-2023).
Han ble bremset av alvorlige medisinske problemer i de siste årene i Cleveland, men han holdt seg unna å kalle avgangen en pensjonisttilværelse.
«Jeg har aldri vært veldig bekymret for ordet pensjonere seg,» sa han i fjor. «Jeg antar at når du sier pensjonere deg, er det som om du går hjem og ikke gjør noe. Føler ikke sånn heller. Vi finner ut av noe som gir mening.»
Han fant det noe på den andre siden av Ohio.
Med 1 950 seire er han 13. på karrierelisten, med Casey Stengel (1 905) og Leo Durocher (2 008), to andre fargerike managere som liker Francona elsket fans og spillere.
Franconas fremgang som en av kampens beste managere var noe uventet.
Ting gikk ikke spesielt bra for ham i Philadelphia, hvor han hadde fire strake tapsesonger, ble konstant buet i en krevende, sportsgal by og fikk kuttet dekkene på bilen sin på dagen for fans.
Han var et usannsynlig valg for Bostons jobb, men hevdet umiddelbart legendarisk status ved å vinne World Series i sin første sesong.
Red Sox overvant et 3-0-underskudd i AL Championship Series og feide St. Louis for å avslutte en 86-årig mesterskapstørke og utdrive «Curse of the Bambino», en oppfattet hex på laget etter at Babe Ruth ble solgt til rival New York Yankees.
Da hans periode i Boston ble avsluttet i 2011 midt i noen kontroverser, tok Francona et friår og jobbet i kringkasting før han dro til Cleveland, hvor faren hans tilbrakte seks sesonger og han selv spilte 62 kamper i 1988.
Francona tok Cleveland til sluttspillet syv ganger på sine 11 sesonger. The Guardians, den gang kjent som indianerne, kom seg til World Series i 2016 bare for å tape mot Chicago Cubs i en serie med syv kamper.
Kjent som Tito, hans avdøde fars navn, ble Francona en elsket skikkelse i Cleveland med sin raske vidd og store personlighet.
Han kunne ha tatt jobber andre steder, men følte en dyp forbindelse med organisasjonen etter at faren hans spilte med Cleveland på slutten av 1950-tallet og begynnelsen av 60-tallet.
